OBJETIVO: realizar um inventário qualitativo sobre as trocas e/ou omissões no teste SSW (Staggered Spondaic Word) e suas possíveis correlações com a alteração do processamento auditivo, bem como com as queixas apresentadas. MÉTODOS: foram selecionados 226 protocolos de pacientes que realizaram o SSW na Universidade Federal de São Paulo em 2005. Para analisar os prontuários, computaram-se os dados gerais de anamnese e a descrição do desempenho do paciente no teste, bem como a classificação das alterações. RESULTADOS: não ocorreram associações entre queixas e as classificações dos exames alterados. Houve maior ocorrência de trocas e omissões nos exames alterados. Quanto aos erros como troca e omissões, verificou-se maior número na condição esquerda competitiva. CONCLUSÕES: o tipo de distúrbio do processamento auditivo mais freqüente foi o de decodificação. Com relação às queixas elencadas, as mais apresentadas foram queixas de dificuldade de escrita e de leitura. A maior ocorrência de erros no teste foi observada nos indivíduos com queixas fonoaudiológicas sem, no entanto, existir o predomínio de uma destas queixas em um dos tipos do distúrbio do processamento auditivo classificado. Com base nos achados desse trabalho acredita-se que a presença de elevado número de erros de identificação de palavras do tipo troca ou substituições no teste SSW seja um indicador de inabilidade de análise e síntese fonêmica dos sons da fala. E, ainda um elevado número de omissões seja um indicador de inabilidade de integração dos aspectos acústicos e lingüísticos dos sons da fala que formam uma palavra.
