Embora a homossexualidade não esteja mais no rol das psicopatologias, em muitos países ainda é considerada crime, passível de punição que chega à pena de morte. O avanço na conquista dos direitos homoafetivos trouxe, na mesma medida, o aumento do ultraconservadorismo, expresso em violência. Para Freud, a homossexualidade é tão enigmática quanto a heterossexualidade, mas a crença na complementaridade sexual - impossível para a psicanálise - talvez seja um fator que leve muitos transexuais a buscar harmonizar sexo e gênero. Autoidentificados como homossexuais antes de se dizerem transexuais, a escuta desses sujeitos revela que a adequação do corpo transexual pode estar a serviço da homofobia cultural e internalizada do próprio homossexual. Seria a demanda transexual de corresponder o corpo à alma uma tentativa subreptícia de negação da homossexualidade na contemporaneidade?
Cet article porte sur les questions liées à la transsexualité à partir de la notion psychanalytique de l’hystérie comme structure de base du sujet. Les surprenantes épidémies d’hystérie qui ont eu lieu au cours de l’histoire révèlent comment l’hystérie produit des questions radicales sur l’énigme de la différence sexuelle, adressées au savoir dominant de chaque époque. Pour répondre à la question sur la place de l’hystérie dans le monde contemporain, nous introduisons l’hypothèse suivante : la forme la plus importante que revêt l’hystérie aujourd’hui est l’épidémie de la transsexualité, qui se produit dans la rencontre avec le discours de la science, qui est dominant dans la culture mondialisée.
