To observe the antibiotics usage in post-emergency gastrointestinal surgeries and to assess the adherence of patients to the antibiotics and its adverse effects for achieving good clinical outcomes by educating the patients. The study was conducted in RMMCH, over a period of 6 months. Patient's medication adherence was assessed using MORISKY SCALE and 60 patients were enrolled in the study out of which a greater number of patients were male belonging to 18 to 33 years. Most prescribed antibiotics were cefotaxime and metronidazole. Mostly combinations of antibiotics were used in treatment. Medication adherence was significantly improved 17 % as the impact of our patient counselling. We observed that cephalosporin and nitroimidazole category drugs were given most probably in emergency gastrointestinal surgeries.
