Two 8-month-old and one 7.5-month-old Anatolian Shepherd dogs were examined because of excessive drooling and poor weight gain. The 2 older dogs were full brothers, and the younger dog was their half sister; all 3 had the same sire. Physical examination revealed that the dogs were unable to protrude their tongues properly. In all 3, the tip of the tongue was notched and deviated ventrally when the dog attempted to protrude the tongue. In addition, a thin tissue band between the sublingual surface of the tongue and the floor of the oral cavity was seen; this tissue band extended from the lingual frenulum to the gingiva of the mandibular incisors. Frenuloplasty was performed to correct the complete ventral ankyloglossia. Immediately after surgery, the tongue was more mobile, and during recheck examinations, the dogs appeared to be able to use their tongues normally and could protrude their tongues when panting. They had gained weight and weighed almost as much as their healthy siblings. In all 3 dogs, the tip of the tongue retained a "W" shape.
SummaryA new form of bovine Clostridium botulinum toxicity was described as visceral botulism. Long-lasting absorption of very low quantities of botulinum toxin may interfere with neurological control of intestinal physiology instead of acute or subacute lethal effects. The objective of this study was to investigate the presence of C. botulinum toxins and their types in abomasal content and serum of dairy cows diagnosed with abomasal displacement. Abomasum displacement was confirmed in 17 cows by laparoscopic examination and abomasal content and serum samples were collected during surgical correction. The mouse toxicity and neutralization bioassay was used to detect and identify the C. botulinum toxins in samples. Clostridium botulinum toxin type C was detected in 2 of abomasums contents and in 1 of sera. The toxin detected animals were fed with silage. Although the identification ratio (17.6%) of C. botulinum type C toxin in this study seems so farther to correlate AD with C. botulinum toxins; we are of the opinion that C. botulinum toxins, especially type C, may be associated with AD because AD is considered to be a multifactorial disease. Keywords: Cow, Abomasal displacement, Clostridium botulinum, Toxin Abomasum Deplasmanlı İneklerde Clostridium botulinum Toksinlerinin Araştırılması ÖzetClostridium botulinum toksikasyonunun yeni bir formu 'visceral botulizm' olarak tanımlanmaktadır.
Çalışma materyalini 107 at oluşturdu. Anahtar sözcükler: At, m. biceps brachii, ultrasonografi. Ultrasonographic evaluation of biceps brachii muscle and bicipital tendon in horsesSummary: The objectives of the study were to determine the normal and abnormal ultrasonographic images of biceps brachii muscle and bicipital tendon, which is the major extensor of scapulohumeral joint, and to statistically evaluate the sectional measurements of bicipital tendon. One hundred seven horses were included in the study and they were divided into four age groups. Transversal and sagittal ultrasonographic images of the right and left biceps brachii muscles and bicipital tendons were obtained from each horse using 5.0 and 7.5-8.0 MHz linear transducers. Transversal images of bicipital tendon revealed that the tendon originated from the supraglenoid tubercle of the scapula (zone A) as a hiperechoic convex structure, and continued as a homogeneously echogenic biportioned texture till the level of intertubercular sulcus (zone B). At the point of intertubercular groove (zone C), it was determined that the tendon composed of lateral, intermediate and medial lobes and the sagittal measurements of these lobes were 21.4 mm, 11.18 mm and 16.4 mm, respectivel...
