Park-and-ride is a traffic management method of traffic congestion problem in urban areas. As an extent of total demand management, park-and-ride service (P&R service) has broadly implemented in many countries. P&R service has proven to be progressive in alleviating traffic congestion despite of complication in finding parking spaces in the city centers. The objective of this research is to discuss a model to shift car travelers’ to park-and-ride service (P&R service) and to investigate the factors which influence car travelers’ behavior. This study can support policy makers’ with useful information for future planning and development of park-and-ride service. Research outcomes will support policy-making and provide base for future study on modal choice behavior model for park-and-ride service.
Abstract. During or immediately after rainfall many slope failures have been observed. The slope failure occurred due to rainfall infiltration that rapidly increase the pore pressure and trigger the slope failure. Numerous studies have been conducted to investigate the rainfall-induced slope failure, but the mechanism of slope failure is still not well clarified. To investigate mechanism of rainfall-induced slope failure laboratory experiments have been conducted in flume. The slope was prepared with sandy soil in flume with constant inclination of 45°, because most of rainfall-induced slope failure occurred in sandy soil and on steep slope. The hydrological parameters such as pore pressure and moisture content were measured with piezometers and advanced Imko TDRs respectively. The slope failure occurred due to increase in moisture content and rise in pore pressure. During the flowslide type of slope failure the sudden increase in pore pressure was observed. The higher moisture content and pore pressure was at the toe of the slope. The pore pressure was higher at the toe of the slope and smaller at the upper part of the slope. After the saturation the run-off was observed at the toe of the slope that erodes the toe and forming the gullies from toe to upper part of the slope. In the case antecedent moisture conditions the moisture content and the pore pressure increased quickly and producing the surface runoff at the horizontal part of the slope. The slope having less density suffer from flowslide type of the failure, however in dense slope no major failure was occurred even at higher rainfall intensity. The antecedent moisture accompanied with high rainfall intensity also not favors the initiation of flowslide in case of dense slope. The flowslide type of failure can be avoided by controlling the density of soil slope. Knowing such parameters that controls the large mass movement helpful in developing the early warning system for flowslide type of failure.
Numerical modelling can simulate the interaction between structural elements and the soil continuum in a piled-raft foundation. The present work utilized a two-dimensional finite element Plaxis 2D software to investigate the settlement, swelling, and structural behavior of foundations during the settlement and swelling of soil on various soil profiles under various load combinations and geometry conditions. The field and laboratory testing have been performed to determine the behavior soil parameters necessary for numerical modelling. The Mohr–Coulomb model is utilized to simulate the behavior of soil, as this model requires very few input parameters, which is important for the practical geotechnical behavior of soil. From this study, it was observed that, as soil is soft and has less stiffness, the un-piled raft was not sufficient to resists and higher loads and exceeds the limits of settlement. Piled raft increases the load carrying capacity of soil, and the lower soil layer has a higher stiffness where the pile rests, decreasing the significant settlement. Further, the effects of (L/d) and (s/d) of the pile and Krs on the settlement are also discussed, detailed numerically under different scenarios. The swelling of expansive soil was also simulated in Plaxis 2D with an application of positive volumetric strain. The above-mentioned parametric study was similarly implemented for the heaving of foundation on expansive soil.
The majority of historical heritage structures of Makli, Thatta require rehabilitation. As the Tomb of Jam Nizam-al-Din Samoo is near the slope’s edge, the settlement increased due to slope degradation. This study aims to investigate the effect of structural elements such as secant pile and structural nails on the settlement of Tomb. From this study, it was observed that with the installation of secant piles on the slope, Tomb’s settlement can be reduced considerably; moreover, the anchors did not have an appreciable role in the settlement. The secant pile of 12 m sufficient to reduce settlement. This will be economical and easy approach as compare to the retaining wall. The Factor of safety (FOS) reduced from 1.36 to 1.10 with increase of slope from 45 to 35. The FOS of slope also increased with the installation of nails from east side of slope. The will reduce the chances of slope failure and consequently the tilting/collapse of Tomb.
