Indonesia merupakan negara kepulauan yang sebagian besar wilayahnya adalah perairan, maka segala aktivitas di laut menjadi bagian penting bagi kehidupan masyarakat Indonesia. Fenomena laut yang sangat mempengaruhi efisiensi dan keselamatan di laut adalah gelombang tinggi, oleh karena itu diperlukan informasi tentang variasi dan karakteristik tinggi gelombang di perairan Indonesia. Gelombang laut yang paling dominan diakibatkan oleh faktor angin, maka perhitungan tinggi gelombang laut dalam kajian ini menggunakan model gelombang Windwaves-05, dimana model ini menghitung tinggi gelombang berdasarkan energi dari angin permukaan. Hasil dari kajian ini menunjukkan bahwa, variasi gelombang di perairan Indonesia berkaitan erat dengan pola angin musiman yang terjadi di wilayah Indonesia. Pada saat monsun Asia dan Australia (DJF dan JJA), rata-rata tinggi gelombang lebih tinggi dibanding pada masa peralihan (MAM dan SON) dan puncak rata-rata gelombang tertinggi terjadi pada bulan Januari dan Juli. Rata-rata tinggi gelombang di wilayah perairan terbuka lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan perairan antar pulau, kondisi ini terjadi karena adanya perbedaan panjang fetch yang terbentuk di wilayah perairan tersebut. Berkaitan dengan pentingnya informasi tentang gelombang laut, terutama bagi keselamatan beragam kegiatan di laut, berdasarkan data periode tahun 2000-2010, dilakukan studi tentang gelombang tinggi di perairan Indonesia. Hasil studi menunjukkan bahwa variasi spasial dan temporal tinggi gelombang dan frekuensi terjadinya gelombang tinggi mempunyai pola yang berasosiasi dengan siklus angin monsunal, periode monsun Australia (Desember, Januari, Februari) dan monsoon Australia (Juni, Juli, Agustus). Daerah rawan gelombang tinggi pada periode monsun Asia umumnya lebih luas daripada pada periode monsun Australia. Pada periode peralihan antar monsun, sebagian besar wilayah perairan Indonesia tidak rawan gelombang tinggi. Daerah rawan gelombang tinggi pada periode peralihan antar monsun umumnya lebih sempit dan terdapat di perairan Indonesia yang menjadi bagian dari Laut Cina Selatan, Samudera Pasifik dan Samudera Hindia, terutama selatan Jawa sampai Bengkulu. Meskipun korelasinya tidak signifikan, berlangsungnya El-Nino menyebabkan meningkatnya tinggi gelombang di wilayah perairan Indonesia bagian timur, terutama utara ekuator dan berlangsungnya La-Nina menyebabkan meningkatnya tinggi gelombang di perairan Indonesia yang berada di Samudera Hindia terutama di selatan Jawa. Sedangkan terjadinya IODM negatif menyebabkan meningkatnya tinggi gelombang di perairan barat Sumatera sebelah utara ekuator.
Wilayah Sulawesi dan Maluku terletak di kawasan Indonesia Timur yang terdiri dari ratusan pulau kecil yang sebagian besar berpenduduk. Seiring perkembangan zaman, kebutuhan listrik di daerah tersebut semakin meningkat. Upaya diversifikasi pembangkit listrik dengan sumber energi alternatif ramah lingkungan menjadi suatu hal yang penting.
Suhu permukaan laut (SPL) merupakan komponen penting yang dapat mengendalikan cuaca dan iklim di wilayah Indonesia. Seiring dengan adanya isu perubahan iklim yang ditandai dengan peningkatan suhu global, maka SPL disinyalir juga berubah. Pada penelitian ini dikaji tentang karakteristik dan tren perubahan SPL di wilayah Indonesia. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui ada tidaknya perubahan SPL di wilayah Indonesia. Untuk itu dianalisa data SPL selama 28 tahun (1982-2009) dengan metode Mann-Kendall test. Domain yang digunakan adalah 15°LU-15°LS, 90°BT-145°BT. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian ini diperoleh bahwa karakteristik siklus SPL di wilayah Indonesia berhubungan erat dengan siklus monsun yang bertiup di wilayah ini dimana pada periode monsun Asia SPL di wilayah utara lebih hangat sebaliknya pada periode monsun Australia, di selatan yang lebih hangat dan di sekitar ekuator mengalami SPL paling hangat pada periode peralihan. Secara umum di wilayah Indonesia terutama di inner sea terjadi tren peningkatan SPL dengan probabilitas > 95%. Daerah inlet Arus Lintas Indonesia (ARLINDO) dan South Equatorial Current yang meliputi perairan sekitar Biak, Selat Makassar, Halmahera, dan Laut Banda, pada umumnya mengalami o tren peningkatan SPL yang paling tinggi dibandingkan wilayah sekitarnya dengan peningkatan mencapai 0,5-1,1 C pada periode DJF. Pada masa peralihan dan musim kemarau, hanya di Pasifik bagian barat yang mengalami tren meningkat.
Di negara kepulauan seperti Indonesia, informasi tentang tinggi gelombang sangat penting untuk menunjang aktivitas di laut. Mengingat hal tersebut, akurasi prakiraan tinggi gelombang perlu mendapat perhatian. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui performa model prediksi gelombang laut Windwaves-05 yang digunakan BMKG sejak tahun 2004 terhadap data observasi satelit altimeter AVISO dengan menghitung nilai korelasi, kesalahan absolut, dan kesalahan relatif model selama periode tahun 2010. Dari hasil verifikasi, diperoleh nilai korelasi antara luaran model Windwaves-05 dengan AVISO bervariasi diatas 0,7, dengan nilai korelasi terendah (0,77) diperoleh pada bulan Februari dan yang tertinggi pada bulan Mei (0,94), dan nilai bias absolut tinggi gelombang yang diperoleh umumnya bervariasi kurang dari 0,8 meter, serta kesalahan relatif rata-rata model sebesar 24%. Hasil kajian ini menunjukkan bahwa model gelombang laut Windwaves-05 mempunyai performa yang cukup baik dan dapat digunakan untuk prakiraan tinggi gelombang di perairan Indonesia.
