Esse capítulo abrange o relato de experiência dos autores quanto à descoberta de duas variações anatômicas no plexo braquial de cadáveres de uma instituição de ensino superior localizada em Fortaleza, no Ceará. Em uma, ocorria a anastomose completa do nervo musculocutâneo com o nervo mediano, acarretando na ausência do nervo cutâneo lateral do antebraço; na outra, o músculo peitoral menor era inervado pelo nervo peitoral lateral. Ademais, o capítulo traz uma revisão clássica do plexo braquial, além de um compilado de algumas variações anatômicas, como a presença do nervo frênico no plexo braquial, o curso do nervo dorsal da escápula fora do músculo escaleno médio, as anastomoses de Riché-Cannieu e Martin-Gruber, entre outras. A existência dessas variações anatômicas possui relevância clínico-cirúrgica em diversos aspectos. Por exemplo, em procedimentos anestésicos na região cérvico-torácica e apendicular, pode-se haver dificuldade em realizar o bloqueio nervoso. Além disso, a presença de algumas dessas variações propicia a ocorrência de erros no diagnóstico de patologias relacionadas aos nervos envolvidos. Outrossim, no intra-operatório cirúrgico, uma parcela dessas variações predispõe a exposição do plexo braquial a lesões iatrogênicas. Sendo assim, é de grande importância o conhecimento dessas variações para os profissionais da área da saúde, os quais, em posse dessas informações, poderão atuar com mais segurança e eficiência em procedimentos que envolvem o plexo braquial.
O processo estiloide é uma protuberância que emerge da parte inferior da base do crânio. Ele se relaciona anatomicamente com diversos nervos, vasos, músculos e ligamentos, além de possuir importantes conexões embriológicas. Quando essa projeção tem um comprimento elevado ou quando há uma calcificação do ligamento estilo-hioideo, pode ocorrer a síndrome de Eagle, uma condição rara cuja sintomatologia inclui, dentre outras queixas, dores na região cervico-facial. O estudo de uma caixa craniana que possuía um tamanho aberrante do processo estiloide associado ao relato de uma colaboradora detentora da síndrome foi de grande valia para uma melhor compreensão dessa patologia e de suas implicações clínico-cirúrgicas, temas esses abordados neste capítulo.
Os vasos sanguíneos participam de todos os sistemas do corpo humano e podem variar em número, posição, irrigação e estrutura. Não obstante, a nefrologia e urologia, cada uma em sua especialidade, lidam de modo geral com a vascularização dos órgãos que lhes competem. Desse modo, o capítulo trata de um achado anatômico importante e atípico, encontrado no Anfiteatro de Anatomia de uma instituição de ensino superior localizada em Fortaleza, Ceará, o qual possui dados de que pouco mais de 1% dos casos estudados apresentaram essa variação além deste relato de experiência detalhando a peça anatômica encontrada. Ademais, é importante a discussão e a difusão desse conhecimento para o setor clínico cirúrgico, de forma a possibilitar que os profissionais tenham maior destreza em tratar desses pacientes e consigam taxas mais elevadas de sucesso operatório dos casos de nefrectomias, varizes pélvicas, varicocele e trombose da veia testicular direita.
