O artigo apresenta um estudo bibliográfico e análise por imagens georreferenciadas sobre os efeitos da urbanização e os impactos gerados para a degradação do corrégo Arareau, no perímetro urbano do município de Rondonópolis, Mato Grosso. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi elucidar as alterações e os possíveis impactos gerados ao córrego Arareau, por conta da falta de planejamento e crescimento desordenado da urbanização no município de Rondonópolis - MT. Os resultados apontam que os efeitos são severos e que existe grande supressão vegetal, ocupação irregular da mata ciliar, erosão e lançamento de carga de esgoto via galeria pluvial ao longo de todo córrego. O estudo aponta a realidade da Áreas de Preservação Permanente (APP) do córrego Arareau no decorrer do processo da expansão urbana, evidencia que o aumento gradativo e irregular do crescimento urbano ao longo do perímetro da cidade trouxe consequências ambientais para o curso fluvial e redução da capacidade de suporte para o abastecimento municipal. Constatou-se que a Área de Preservação Permanente (APP) total do córrego Arareau, nos limites do perímetro urbano, do município de Rondonópolis, corresponde a 126 hectares, tendo em vista uma área de proteção de 50 metros, para os cursos d’água que tenham de 10 a 50 metros de largura. Aferiu-se ainda que, desse total, cerca de 31,31 hectares encontram-se degradados (25%). Os resultados do estudo apontam para a necesssidade de uma intervenção urgente e imediata, que possibilite a redução dos impactos ambientais atuais, visando a preservação do ecossistema da área do córrego, responsável pela proteção das áreas de preservação permanente, bem como do corpo hídrico que atualmente encontra-se em condições de reversão. Nesse sentido serão necessários esforços do poder público municipal e mobilização da iniciativa privada, alcançando toda a sociedade civil.
