Introduction:India is a country in transition, the population is graying and the non communicable diseases are rising. In the rural areas of India, the detection of hypertension is poor because of limited healthcare facilities and poor awareness among the people. In one such village, Mirzapur, adopted by the Aligarh Muslim University, there is a planned project to control hypertension in the villages through some innovative approaches. This study was the assessment phase of this project for mass management of hypertension to steer and guide the next phase of the project.Aim:The main objectives of this study were: to determine the prevalence of hypertension in residents ≥ 40 years in Mirzapur village, Aligarh, and, to assess the presence of rule of halves in hypertensionResults and Discussion:The present study in residents more than 40 years of age in the Mirzapur village in Aligarh found that the prevalence of hypertension in the study population was 41.9%, with a higher prevalence in older age groups. The mean blood pressure of the study population was found to be 100.03±13.17 mm Hg. The high prevalence reported in the present study reflects and reaffirms the increasing trend of hypertension in not only the urban, but also rural India, at least in the older age group. The problem of hypertension, due to its silent and asymptomatic nature, frequently depicts a rule of halves in places with weaker health system and an equally weaker health awareness and information among populations and the same is true for this village.Conclusion:There is an urgent need to conduct similar researches in other adopted villages of the country for the sake of inclusive development to find the exact burden of this silent and asymptomatic killer. More importantly, there is a need to find innovative solutions to combat the problem of hypertension detection and management.
Ear diseases are particularly important in primary school children because it is the earliest time when they learn ABSTRACT Background: Hearing impairment in school children is particularly important because it is the earliest time when the foundation for education and mental and linguistic development is laid down. Present study aims at estimate the burden of hearing impairment among school children in rural and urban field practice areas of Urban and Rural Health Training Centers, JNMCH, AMU, Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, India. Methods: Estimated sample of 630 was taken. Sampling method: probability proportionate to size (PPS) and stratified random sampling. The children were interviewed using semi structured format followed by general examination and assessment of hearing function. The diagnosis of hearing impairment was done on the basis of history, voice test and abnormal tuning fork tests. It was considered to be present when at least either of the voice test and tuning fork tests was found to be abnormal. Results: The prevalence of Hearing Impairment among the study population was found to be 17.9% (109/610), observed to be higher among rural (18.8%) as compared to urban (13.5%) school children. It was found to be significantly associated with Standard of living Index (SLI) and nutritional status of the children. Conclusions: The study highlights the high burden of hearing impairment in study population and the need for strengthening the school health activities focused on hearing impairment.
Introduction: The cumulative outcomes of health research in the modern times had a huge effect on human health and longevity. The primary care physicians are the first point of contact between the health system and the society. Therefore their responsibility is higher to provide the latest information to their patients, in the context of rapidly changing field of medical science. Doctors are expected to have a basic knowledge of research methodology in order to develop a critical thinking and this is the rationale to include the research activity is an integral part of post-graduate medical training. Aim: We aimed to assess the previous involvement in research activities and knowledge in basic research methods among primary care physicians in central region, Saudi Arabia. Methods: It was a cross sectional descriptive study conducted on a conveniently selected sample of doctors (N=80) working under general directorate of health affairs in Riyadh region, Ministry of Health. The data was collected through a pre-designed, self-administered survey instrument containing closed ended questions. Results: The mean age of the physicians was observed to be 44.7 ± 9.6 years. About 32% doctors had previous experience of writing a research proposal while only 20% had any publication in a scientific journal. About 45% had attended workshop on research methodology within last five years. Only one item related to ‘consent in medical research’ was answered correctly by 60% respondents. The correct responses in other knowledge items scored less than 50% (ranging from 18.8% to 37.5%). The proportion of doctors having any publication was observed to significantly higher among younger age (p<0.05). Significantly higher proportion was observed for “having experience of proposal writing” and “paper presentation in a scientific conference” among family medicine and other specialties as compared to general practice (p<0.05). Conclusion: We found low previous engagement with research among doctors with low level of knowledge regarding basic research methods. This was particularly evident among general practitioners as compared specialist doctors. Regular conduction of research workshop with encouragement to undertake small research activities at the primary care should be promoted.
