The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of substrates on the growth and yield of Cascade and Samambaia cherry tomato cultivars under protected environment. A completely randomized experimental design with six treatments and four replications was adopted. The treatments consisted of six substrates resulting from the combination of soil (CS), bovinemanure (BM), rice husk (RH) and rice hull ash (RA), in the proportions: S1 -70% SC + 10% BM + 10% RH + 10% RA; S2 -60% SC + 20% BM + 10% RH + 10% RA; S3 -50% SC + 30% BM + 10% RH + 10% RA;S4 -60% SC + 30% BM + 10% RH; S5 -70% SC + 20% BM + 10% RH; and S6 -100% SC. Plant growth, yield and development parameters were evaluated. Cherry tomato growth and yield changed according to the substrate characteristics. The substrate composed by soil was not efficient, presenting the lowest values for all the vegetative and reproductive parameters studied. The substrates made from alternative ecologically based residues are interesting and alternative sources for tomato cultivation aiming at the reuse of the matter and the sustainability of the production system.
Sclerotinia sclerotiorumis one of the main pathogens of soybean crop, reducing crop yield potential and causing losses of up to 37%. Because it is a soil inhabitant, its management is difficult. However, the adoption of alternative methods, such as the use of antagonists, may help reduce the pathogen inoculum. Thus, the objective of this work was to select native soybean rhizobacteria and to verify the potential of in vitroantagonism against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, as well as the effect of these isolates on the germination and vegetative developmentof soybean seedlings. For this, tests of inhibition and mycelial growth rate index, production of volatile compounds, production of rhizobacterial metabolites and vegetative development of soybean seedlings were conducted. With respect to antagonism, I1, U4, M6, M8 and U13 isolates were the most effective. For the production of volatile compounds by the overlapping plate method, isolates M8, M10, M9, I1, M6 and U4 had the largest reductions in pathogen mycelial growth. For the ability of isolates to produce water-soluble metabolites in culture medium, it was found that isolates I1, M3, M6 and U13 were the most effective. For the vegetative development of soybean seedlings, except for the root length, in which the isolates M8, I14, M9, I1, M6 and M10 provided the largest increases in root size, the other variables did not show significant increases when compared with the witness. In general, isolates M8, M10, M9, I1, M6 and U4 are effective in inhibiting mycelial growth of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, produce volatile organic compounds that help control the pathogen, however, they do not show significant increases in the vegetative development of soybean seedlings.
This study aimed to evaluate the seedlings growth of Petunia x hybridaand Gomphrena globosaat different times and substrates based on agricultural residues. A completely randomized experimental design was adopted, in a factorial scheme, with treatments consisting of four replications and the experimental unit formed by ten plants. The flower species Petunia x hybridaand G. globosawere cultivated in five substrate compositions and in two seasons, with sowing carried out in April and June for Petunia x hybridaand April and October for G. globosa. The substrates were composed using commercial substrate (CM), bovine manure (BM), worm humus (WM) and rice husk ash (HA), in volumetric proportions: (S1) 100% CS; (S2) 40% CS + 20% BM + 20% WH + 20% HA; (S3) 60% CS + 20% WH + 20% HA; (S4) 60% CS + 20% BM + 20% HA; and (S5) 80% CS + 20% BM. Emergence, emergence speed index, height, number of leaves, length of the largest leaf, length of the largest root, dry mass of the aboveground part, dry mass of the root system and total dry mass were evaluated. The seedlings growth of the Petunia x hybridaand G. globosachanged according to the characteristics of the substrates and the growing seasons. The substrate composed with 80% commercial substrate and 20% bovine manure showed similar or superior results to the commercial substrate and can be used in order to reduce production costs without prejudice to the seedlings growth. The cultivation of Petunia x hybridain April resulted in seedlings with greater height, leaf length and greater accumulation of phytomass. The G. globosa seedlings showed greater development of the aboveground part and the root system, in addition to greater accumulation of phytomass when cultivated in October.
