INTRODUÇÃO: A maturação é um processo biológico que influencia o desempenho esportivo de jovens atletas. OBJETIVO: O objetivo foi caracterizar a maturação somática de jovens nadadores e a relação com o desempenho esportivo. MÉTODOS: Participaram 252 nadadores de ambos os sexos (14,7±1,1 anos) que disputaram um campeonato estadual. Foram mensurados, durante a competição, a massa corporal, estatura, altura sentado, experiência esportiva e o desempenho (Índice Técnico). A maturação foi avaliada pela idade prevista do pico de velocidade do crescimento (PVC), sendo estimada pelo método maturity offset (MO). RESULTADOS: A classificação do estágio maturacional em atrasados, normomaturos e avançados foi de 4,6%, 80,8% e 14,6% (masculino) e de 25,2%, 73,7% e 1,1% (feminino), respectivamente. O MO mostrou-se positivamente correlacionado ao índice técnico no masculino (r=0,57; p<0,001) e no feminino (r=0,30; p=0,003). Os nadadores avançados apresentaram melhor índice técnico quando comparados aos normomaturos (627±96 vs. 578±98 pontos; p=0,04) e atrasados (627±96 vs. 489±73 pontos, p=0,003), respectivamente. Já no feminino, não foram observadas diferenças estatisticamente significantes.CONCLUSÃO: Conclui-se que a maturação somática influencia positivamente o desempenho em jovens nadadores do sexo masculino.
