Recent years have witnessed independent game production rise to a prominent position in the digital game industry. Be it by the fresh, innovative take it brought to the scene or by its rebellious attitude towards what is perceived as mainstream, the term “indie game” has become somewhat of a buzzword. The following study displays a series of findings of research fieldwork aiming to advance the study of indie game development by investigating organizational and managerial practices commonly adopted by these developers. Relying on semi-structured interviews conducted with lead developers of seven Brazilian indie game firms, the connections, similarities, and differences among these developers’ firm structure and project management practices and those of the larger game industry is explored, utilizing the lenses of scope, organization, time, cost, and quality management as a starting point. Given the growing and significant relevance of the game industry as a whole, this empirical study offers pragmatic data on the still-niche research topic of indie games.
Palavras-chave: BIM, Modelagem da Informação da Construção, Ensino de BIM no BrasilAbstract: BIM -Building Information Modeling, has received attention from the Architecture, Engineering, Construction and Operation markets for its information integration potential and for the productivity gain provided. However, the demand for qualified professionals exposes a reality that has put pressure on universities, which is the lack of teaching of BIM in undergraduate courses. This research deals with a literature search on articles focusing on the teaching of BIM in Brazil. Several papers were analyzed under the classification of "discussion on strategy for inclusion of teaching of BIM" and "application of strategy for inclusion of teaching of BIM" in curricula. A little off the axis treated by the research, but still relevant, is addressed the teaching of BIM and its relation with the teaching of drawing. By the evaluation of the articles, it was observed that much has been studied regarding the introduction of BIM in teaching, but little has been reported on the implementation of the paradigm in the academic area.
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose a framework to assist in the estimation of effort for projects in the field of design. The study first seeks supporting material to outline an understanding of how design professionals have access to time estimation information for quoting their projects. Design/methodology/approach The work was based on in-depth interviews conducted with 13 professionals from various design sectors that focused on understanding important elements of the project quotation process. Content analysis was performed on the information provided, and four dimensions were identified. A framework that included these dimensions was designed and validated using a focus group composed of professionals involved in project quotation. The framework includes the generation of a project network structure; identifying tasks and their duration for each design activity; and the ways in which this information remains updated and evolves through the incorporation of dynamic systems concepts. Findings The results of this study will be the production of an external knowledge base that designers can use as a basis for performing their profession. Originality/value This study is relevant because there is no information source that addresses tasks and associated durations on which design professionals can rely for the development of quotations.
Over the past few decades, game mods have slowly walked their way into mainstream popularity and although not being confined anymore to the dark corners of the internet, the reality is that we still do not know much about how mods are created and how modders manage to achieve their objectives. Seeking to better understand the activity of mod development, this article explores key influencing factors on mod projects coordination and development by taking a qualitative approach based on in-depth interviews with nine lead developers of total conversion mod projects. We identified three key factors ‐ tendency towards agility, co-creative nature and open source attitude ‐ that we believe are etched at the core of the activity of modding and that lead to, and are manifested, in the unique ways of how modders approach software development.
