Purpose – This paper aims to examine the prevalence and trend of experimental research in hospitality and tourism. Hospitality and tourism researchers have long been encouraged to increase their use of experimental designs. However, a solid support for such advocacy is lacking, and the present paper fills in this research gap. Design/methodology/approach – By using a systematic approach, this study reviews 161 tourism and hospitality articles and conducts content analysis based on certain criteria including journal outlets, Social Sciences Citation Index journals, years of publication, contexts, disciplinary foci, experimental designs, settings, number of independent variables, number of studies per article, manipulation methods, manipulation check, research subjects, sample size, subjects per experimental condition, statistical analyses and provision of effect size. The criteria between hospitality and tourism publications are also compared. Findings – Findings show that the number of experimental publications has significantly increased over the past decade, especially in hospitality publications. Nonetheless, there is still room for improvement in applying the experimental design in hospitality and tourism research. Research limitations/implications – Researchers in hospitality and tourism are recommended to report manipulation check results and the effect size of statistically significant results, as well as to devote more effort to knowledge accumulation and methodological advancement of experimental designs. Originality/value – This study is the first to review experimental research in hospitality and tourism. The findings of this study provide significant implications and directions for hospitality and tourism researchers to conduct experimental research in the future.
PurposeThis paper aims to identify and analyse potential Vietnamese consumers' perceptions of organic foods.Design/methodology/approachA deductive approach of reasoning was employed to address the positivism research philosophy through the survey research strategy. Quantitative data were collected from 264 potential Vietnamese consumers through a self‐administered structured questionnaire and analysed using frequencies, descriptive statistics, chi squared test, principal components analysis, t‐tests and a Kolmogorov‐Smirnov test.FindingsPotential Vietnamese consumers' willingness to purchase organic foods was linked positively to health and safety whilst the females appreciated their nutritional value. Environmental and sustainability concerns did not influence purchasing decisions. Because of their perceived superior quality, potential Vietnamese consumers were not price sensitive towards organic foods.Research limitations/implicationsThis study lacks the qualitative depth and the employment of quota sampling technique to select respondents may impact external validity.Practical implicationsThe findings can benefit organic foods sellers and retailers in developing appropriate sales and marketing strategies by differentiating between organic foods and conventional foods to target and attract potential Vietnamese consumers, and to expand the existing organic foods market in Vietnam.Originality/valueThe present paper supplements the knowledge gap by identifying and analysing potential Vietnamese consumers' perceptions of organic foods in order to assist organic foods sellers and retailers to understand potential Vietnamese consumers and expand their organic foods market in Vietnam.
a b s t r a c tThe preliminary stages of a large scale culture-led urban regeneration project initiated by the Korean government in Gwangju were studied. Stakeholders' perceptions of culture's contribution to urban regeneration and their views on collaborative partnerships were explored. Qualitative data were gathered via semi-structured interviews from 19 purposively selected stakeholders. This case study determined public-private cooperation in regenerating Gwangju could, simultaneously, generate positive socio-cultural and economic impacts in society. However, stakeholders lacked opportunities for active participation. Hence, closer working relationships between central-municipal government and public-private/voluntary sectors were recommended. The case confirmed that long-term implementation of such projects needs to be anticipated and based on longitudinal and structured strategic planning to promote successful partnership collaborations amongst central/municipal governments, local communities and residents. This paper contributed to the knowledge gap in the area of stakeholder collaboration in building tourism/ cultural systems by examining the micro-level interactions amongst stakeholders.
