O presente artigo visa analisar o discurso de Manoel Ribeiro Rocha expendido na sua obra Ethiope Resgatado, Empenhado, Sustentado, Corregido, Instruído E Libertado, publicada em 1758, tentando superar a tendência maniqueísta das interpretações que sobre o autor e a obra foram despendidas, ora como defensor “reformista” do sistema escravocrata do Brasil colonial, ora como abolicionista/revolucionário, algumas com manifesto aproveitamento político-ideológico. Procuraremos gizar a perspetiva que recoloque Manoel Ribeiro Rocha no seu tempo e lugar, defendendo que a ambiguidade e delicados equilíbrios atinentes ao seu contexto histórico, especialmente a imprescindibilidade do escravismo para a sustentação económica do Império Colonial Português, inevitavelmente, repercutiram naquela obra. Concluímos que Ribeiro Rocha, no século XVIII, lançou um olhar fundamentalmente pragmático sobre a escravidão, sem, contudo, desconsiderar uma perspetiva mais humanizante para os escravos africanos.
