Las sesiones que combinaban la proyección de imágenes, la recitación de textos y la interpretación de melodías musicales alcanzaron entre los siglos xix y xx una importante relevancia sociocultural en España. Para sus fines, dichas sesiones se sirvieron de un nuevo dispositivo que adoptó denominaciones como fantascopio, megascopio, microscopio solar o linterna de proyección, y que dio nombre a un medio de comunicación social muy popular conocido bajo el término de linterna mágica. A pesar de la indudable influencia que tuvo en la España contemporánea, la presencia de la linterna mágica en el ámbito académico siempre ha sido residual. Afortunadamente, desde hace dos décadas, se ha producido un cambio de tendencia más acorde con su relevancia cultural, en buena medida, gracias a la renovación y el empuje introducido por la arqueología de los media. Ante el interés científico creciente hacia un objeto de estudio tan extenso como la linterna mágica en España, el presente texto resume, tras una breve e introductoria historia de la linterna mágica en España, dos estudios de análisis de contenido aplicados a las placas de linterna mágica diseminadas en los fondos patrimoniales del Estado español.
