A região central do estado de São Paulo contém os municípios de Araraquara, São Carlos e Ribeirão Preto e possui características ambientais tais como: manchas de solos férteis Terra Roxa, relevo ondulado e rede hidrográfica que a tornaram sujeita a ampla ocupação, com cultivos de café, laranja e cana de açúcar. Tais condições estão discutidas neste trabalho, assim como o modelo de desenvolvimento agrícola hegemônico que provoca desequilíbrios ambientais e sociais, desmatamento com perda parcial dos biomas Mata Atlântica e Cerrado, degradação do solo e dos recursos hídricos, redução da biodiversidade e homogeneidade social e agrícola. Foram apresentadas algumas alternativas a esse modelo: a pesquisa/ação do Nupedor/ NEEA que envolve propostas agroecológicas para a agricultura familiar dos assentamentos rurais de reforma agrária da região, experiências inovadoras em espaços rurais com práticas educativas e ambientais, em uma ecovila em São Carlos e na Fazenda da Toca em Itirapina. O contexto do trabalho situa ainda a passagem do Complexo Cafeeiro para o Complexo Agroindustrial da Cana e do Álcool, com transformações socioambientais causando desruralização e desurbanização.
Este texto analisa dados sob referenciais teóricos diametralmente oposto. Estimulados pela repentina e recente popularidade de Hannah Arendt, resolvemos submeter os dados de uma dissertação já defendida a um “novo” referencial, extraído do famoso texto de Arendt sobre a crise da educação nos Estados Unidos nos anos 1950. Os dados haviam sido interpretados à luz da epistemologia de Paulo Freire. Em novas análises, a partir de Arendt, nossas interpretações ganharam ainda mais força. No entanto, na comparação final entre os dois pensadores, destacam-se diferenças irreconciliáveis: Para Arendt, é impossível educar adultos e o mundo da educação deve ser desvinculado do mundo da política, já que a responsabilidade do educador se baseia na tradição e na autoridade, enquanto para Freire é possível sim educar adultos e a responsabilidade do educador – tal como em Sartre – leva à liberdade. Concluímos ser possível a educação social de adultos se, numa relação dialógica, nos educarmos com eles.
