A epilepsia é uma neuropatologia comum crônica que atinge cerca de 1% da população mundial e que acomete todas as idades desde crianças a adultos. Considerando as características das crises epilépticas há um aumento de duas a três vezes no risco de mortalidade por diferentes causas, sendo as principais por neurocisticercose, acidentes, traumas e morte súbita. Diante disso, o objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar o perfil epidemiológico dos óbitos por epilepsia no Estado do Tocantins ocorridos entre 2009 e 2019. Trata-se de uma pesquisa descritiva, que inclui os óbitos registrados no Sistema de Informação sobre Mortalidade no Estado do Tocantins, no qual a causa básica tenha sido epilepsia. Entre 2009 e 2019 foram identificados 256 óbitos com causa básica a epilepsia (CID-10 G40), onde 68% são indivíduos do sexo masculino. 58% dos óbitos ocorreram em pessoas com idades entre 20 e 49 anos. Em 2019, a taxa de mortalidade por epilepsia no Tocantins foi de 1,97 (por 100 mil habitantes), superando a taxa da região Norte (1,10) e a do Brasil (1,56). A mortalidade por epilepsia representa um problema de saúde pública no Tocantins. Quando diagnosticada e identificada em tempo oportuno, a crise epiléptica pode ser evitada, considerando que as drogas antiepiléticas são eficazes e seguras na maioria dos casos. As falhas na implementação de medidas preventivas precisam ser superadas, sendo fundamental a busca de estratégias para identificação de fatores de risco e causas de crises epilépticas com a finalidade de permitir planejamento de programas de prevenção e controle.
