The adaptation of Internet memes is an important practice in social media that is an excellent subject of investigation to explain (the instantiation of) multimodal constructions with regard to social-cognitive processes. In this article, we would like to plead for paying more attention to Internet memes as linguistic research object. By using a qualitative-quantitative corpus-pragmatic approach, we worked out the multimodal character of selected constructions being instantiated within adaptations of the so called Merkel-Meme (n=632). We discuss two constructions, which can only be thought of through the interplay of a pictorial component that shows a gesture and varying linguistic elements. This is on the one hand the construction [[so* adjektiv]AdjP + Ausprägungsgrad anzeigende Armgeste] and on the other the construction [[so* artikel (adjektiv) nomen]NP + Umfang anzeigende Armgeste]. Therefore, it becomes evident that the pictorial component influences the linguistic part of the Internet meme.
In this paper, we present the annotation challenges we have encountered when working on a historical language that was undergoing elaboration processes. We especially focus on syntactic ambiguity and gradience in Middle Low German, which causes uncertainty to some extent. Since current annotation tools consider construction contexts and the dynamics of the grammaticalization only partially, we plan to extend CorA -a web-based annotation tool for historical and other nonstandard language data -to capture elaboration phenomena and annotator unsureness. Moreover, we seek to interactively learn morphological as well as syntactic annotations.
Die Autorin widmet sich Postkarten aus einer positionierungstheoretischen Perspektive (Du Bois 2007; Jaffe 2009). Das Hauptaugenmerk liegt dabei auf sprachlichen Positionierungsressourcen, die beim Verfassen von Ansichtskartengrüßen wiederkehrend verwendet werden. Empirische Grundlage ist das an der Universität Zürich angesiedelte Postkartenkorpus [anko], das rund 12.200 transkribierte und annotierte Postkarten von 1900 bis in die 2010er Jahre umfasst (https://www.ds.uzh.ch/de/projekte/ansichtskartenprojekt/korpus.html). Für die Inszenierung als Reisende(r) sind insbesondere zwei Cluster verwandter Form-Funktions-Paare instruktiv: (1) Zum einen ist dies das [Grüße aus/von X]-Muster als komplexe und polyfunktionale Grußtechnik. Sie dient nicht nur der Lokalisierung, sondern in vielen Fällen auch der affektiven Positionierung des Schreibenden sowie zugleich der Bewertung des Urlaubsortes bzw. des Reiseerlebnisses. Zudem ist dieses Muster mit Blick auf die Beziehungspflege funktionalisiert. (2) Zum anderen zählt hierzu das [nach/nachdem X (nun/jetzt/heute/hier) Y]-Muster, das die der (Re-)Konstruktion des Reiseerlebnisses in seiner zeitlich-gerichtet-räumlichen Dynamik fokussiert und den/die Reisende(n) als Entdecker in/von Zeit und Raum entwirft.
This paper elaborates on the notion of uncertainty in the context of annotation in large text corpora, specifically focusing on (but not limited to) historical languages. Such uncertainty might be due to inherent properties of the language, for example, linguistic ambiguity and overlapping categories of linguistic description, but could also be caused by lacking annotation expertise. By examining annotation uncertainty in more detail, we identify the sources and deepen our understanding of the nature and different types of uncertainty encountered in daily annotation practice. Moreover, some practical implications of our theoretical findings are also discussed. Last but not least, this article can be seen as an attempt to reconcile the perspectives of the main scientific disciplines involved in corpus projects, linguistics and computer science, to develop a unified view and to highlight the potential synergies between these disciplines.
