Esse estudo enfoca a parte qualitativa de uma pesquisa quanti-qualitativa, cujo objetivo é o de conhecer a trajetória profissional de algumas mulheres médicas da cidade de Montes Claros (MG). Foram entrevistadas quatro médicas com mais de trinta anos de formadas e que atuaram na cidade. Optou-se pela análise de narrativas, sendo a entrevista o instrumento de pesquisa. A pesquisa foi aprovada pelo Comitê de Ética da Universidade Estadual de Montes Claros – Unimontes, parecer no 1.501.700/2016. Constatou-se que além do pioneirismo que abriu espaço para as mulheres na profissão médica, as entrevistadas deram importantes contribuições profissionais para a sociedade montesclarense. Porém, por adentrarem em um campo profissional hegemonicamente masculino, enfrentaram questões relativas ao sexismo vigente na sociedade e que era reproduzido na cultura médica. Isso fez com que tivessem que superar vários desafios como a luta pela entrada e permanência na medicina; o enfrentamento da discriminação de classe social e étnico-racial; seus esforços para comprovar a competência profissional e para superar as dificuldades de conciliação entre a vida pessoal e o desempenho profissional. Tais achados apontam para a necessidade de as instituições médicas, de ensino e de formação, promoverem o desenvolvimento de uma cultura médica com equidade de gênero e étnico-racial.
