Los proyectos de aprendizaje-servicio (ApS) han demostrado tener un enorme potencial formativo. Para que un proyecto de ApS pueda implementarse exitosamente se deben cuidar aquellos detalles que puedan obstaculizar su inicio. El objetivo de este trabajo es identificar y analizar las dificultades e inconvenientes que se presentan en la etapa inicial de un proyecto de ApS y proponer algunas orientaciones que contribuyan a mejorar una implementación exitosa. Han participado dos grupos de 17 y 19 estudiantes en dos asignaturas de la Universidad de Arturo Prat (Chile), en las que se implementó la metodología ApS, dos docentes responsables de las asignaturas y dos entidades receptoras del servicio. La información se ha recogido mediante un cuestionario de expectativas aplicado al alumnado, una entrevista a los socios, los diarios del alumnado y las notas de campo de las docentes. Los resultados indican que es necesario adelantarse a planificar detalladamente las acciones del alumnado, porque se cuenta con un tiempo bastante acotado. Además, para lograr el éxito del proyecto se requiere establecer relaciones de confianza que permitan conocer el contexto y facilitar la colaboración. Es imprescindible que el diagnóstico se realice adecuadamente para dar respuesta a las necesidades reales de la comunidad.
