Palavras-chave -Floresta pluvial Atlântica, estrutura, classes de tamanho, regeneração.ABSTRACT -(Structure of the tree and shrub component of the Atlantic rain forest, Peruíbe, SP). In this study the structure of the sub-montane Atlantic tropical rain forest tree and shrub component in different size classes was compared and their regeneration dynamics was discussed. The plants in each size class were sampled in plots of different size: Class I (individuals ≤ 15cm tall) in 250 1x1m plots taken in five main samples of 50 units, at three-months intervals, between July/95 and July/96; Class II (individuals >15cm and ≤ 1,3m tall) in ten 2,5x5m plots; Class III (individuals > 1,3m tall and < 5,0cm DBH) in ten 5x10m plots and Class IV (individuals ≥ 5cm DBH) in ten 10x20m plots. The highest diversity was found in intermediate size classes was due to a more even distribution of individuals among species. These classes had also the highest values of quantitative and qualitative species similarity indices. The majority of the species and the individuals were secondary-climax and understory, suggesting that the present forest structure have favored the regeneration of these plant groups.
-(Trails and their ecological role: what have we learned and what are the prospects for restoration of ecosystems?). We aimed at reviewing the ecological role of the trails and inserting this theme into restoration ecology projects. For a comprehensive understanding of this ecological role, we addressed the applicability of trails to Environmental Education (EE) projects and their impacts on vegetation. We showed that trails are suitable places to practice EE programs. On the other hand, we point out a number of potential concerns arising from the use and opening of trails as, for example, soil compaction and changes in the composition, structure, and diversity of adjacent vegetation. Hence, we indicate that trails can be addressed in restoration projects of ecosystems. We conclude by suggesting some questions that can guide future works on trails and vegetation, including their connections with restoration ecology. -(Floristic, phytosociological and phenology of climbers riparian of ''Fazenda Campininha'', Mogi Guaçu, São Paulo State, Brazil). This study aimed to inventory component of climbing plants by studying fl oristic, phytosociological and phenology on a stretch of riparian vegetation of the Estação Ecológica of Fazenda Campininha, Mogi Guaçu, São Paulo State, Brazil (22º10'43"-22º18'19"S e 47º08'05"-47º11'34" W). In a fl oristic study were collected from 89 species belonging to 54 genera within 25 families. The quantitative study sampled 43 species with the highest values of importance to Adenocalymma bracteatum, Forsteronia australis and Banisteriopsis nummifera. The woody climbers accounted for 65.1% of total species and herbaceous plants, 34.8%, both with fruit senescence in the middle of the dry season (June). Adaptation twining was the most frequent, occurring in 42.7% of the species. The choice of sample area and the inclusion diameter ≥ 0,2 cm above the soil were important to indicate that although the sample size was reduced signifi cantly to show the diversity of species (H' = 2.72 nats ind -1) and can be used in the indication of disturbed or preserved areas. -(Do trails affect forest tree communities? Two surveys in the Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil). Forest trails can infl uence the composition and structure of plant communities by causing abiotic changes along their course and in the vicinity. To understand the behavior of the fl oristic and structural vegetation along the trails, two surveys were conducted in the Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil, in the "Parque Estadual das Fontes do Ipiranga", São Paulo, State of São Paulo, and in the "Mata da Biologia", Viçosa, State of Minas Gerais, using identical minimum diameter at breast height and sample areas. For the data analysis, ANOVA and chi-square test were chosen. There were variations in density and number of upright dead plants in both surveys, with higher values alongside the trail. Both fragments showed no relationship between distribution of plants per dispersion syndrome and distance from the trail. It was found that the trails interfere with tree vegetation in both fragments, and it is suggested that trails should come to be treated as a potential source of impact in forest restoration programs. Key words: conservation, edge effect, phytosociology RESUMO -(Trilhas afetam comunidades arbóreas fl orestais?
