This work was carried out to investigate the pulp composition of four mango cultivars (Haden, Tommy Atkins and Ubá) at the ripening stage in relation to three components with antioxidant potential (total phenolics, carotenoids and ascorbic acid). Total phenolic compound content was estimated by the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent and total carotenoid content by spectrophotometry at 450 nm. The contents of beta-carotene and total vitamin C (ascorbic acid and dehydroascorbic acid) were quantified by high performance liquid chromatography. Differences were found among the four mango cultivars in all the components analyzed. The content of phenolic compounds ranged from 48.40 (Haden) to 208.70 mg/100 g (Ubá); total carotenoid from 1.91 (Haden) to 2.63 mg/100 g (Palmer); beta-carotene from 661.27 (Palmer) to 2,220 microg/100 g (Ubá) and total ascorbic acid ranged from 9.79 (Tommy Atkins) to 77.71 mg/100 g (Ubá). These results corroborated previous information that mangoes are a good source of antioxidants in human diet.

R E S U M OMuitas são as suposições quanto à baixa exigência de água da palma mas tais informações dependem de estudos de análise do desempenho da cultura a diferentes condições hídricas. Assim, objetivou-se verificar o efeito de diferentes lâminas de irrigação sobre a morfofisiologia e desempenho produtivo da palma forrageira cultivada em ambiente Semiárido. O experimento foi conduzido no segundo ano produtivo da cultura, em Serra Talhada, PE. As lâminas de água aplicadas totalizaram, ao final do ciclo, 976, 1048, 1096, 1152 e 1421 mm. Na ocasião da colheita foram feitas medidas biométricas e de biomassa das plantas e em seguida obtidos índices de resposta hídrica, morfológicos, morfofisiológicos e feita análise de produtividade. Verificou-se que as lâminas de irrigação não afetaram os índices de resposta hídrica (com exceção do peso fresco do cladódio de 1ª ordem), morfológicos e morfofisiológicos (p > 0,05), assim como o desempenho produtivo; todavia, os valores médios obtidos para a biomassa verde e seca (131,16 e 8,18 t ha -1 ) e do número de cladódios totais (14,13 unid.), se mostraram superiores aos relatos de cultivos em condições de sequeiro. Sugerem-se condições de disponibilidade hídrica de 1048 a 1096 mm ano -1 para a palma forrageira. Morphophysiological characteristic and yield of forage cactus under different irrigation depths A B S T R A C TThere are many assumptions about the low water requirement of forage cactus, but such information depends on performance analysis studies of the crop under different water conditions. Thus, this study aimed to verify the effect of different irrigation depths on morphophysiology and productive performance of forage cactus grown in semiarid environment. The experiment was conducted during the second productive year of the crop in Serra Talhada, PE. Water depths were applied and recorded at the end of the cycle as 976, 1048, 1096, 1152 and 1421 mm. At harvest, biometric and plant biomass measurements were made, and water response indices, morphological, morphophysiological and yield analysis were obtained. It was found that the irrigation depth did not affect the water response indices (except for 1 st cladode fresh weight), morphological and morphophysiological (p > 0.05), as well as the productive performance. However, the mean values obtained for the yield, such as green and dry biomass (131.16 and 8.18 t ha -1 ), and growth variables, such as average total cladodes number (14.13), showed to be superior to reported under rainfed conditions. This paper describes a new gas-chromatography with electron capture detection (GC-ECD) method for determination of some pyrethroids in milk samples. The extraction of the pyrethroids was carried out by liquid-liquid extraction with clean-up by precipitation at low temperature, without additional stages for removal of fat interferences. The method was efficient with recoveries of 93.0+/-0.1% for cipermethrin and 84.0+/-0.3% for deltamethrin. The quantification limits were 0.75 microg L(-1) for both pyrethroids. The method was simple, of easy execution, and used only small quantities of organic solvent. After optimization and validation, the method was used for the determination of residues of the pyrethroids cipermethrin and deltamethrin in milk and in lactea drink commercialized in Viçosa (MG, Brazil). Some samples presented contamination with deltamethrin at levels below the maximum contamination limits established by the FAO.

The antidiabetic activity of aqueous, ethanolic and hexanic extracts of Bauhinia forficata was investigated in a model of alloxan-induced diabetes in rats. The biochemical parameters studied were: plasma glucose, serum triglycerides, cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL), and low density lipoprotein (LDL). Extracts were administered daily for 7 d at doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg, p.o., 48 h after alloxan injection (60 mg/kg, i.v.). The alloxan-diabetic rats showed significant reductions in plasma glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol after treatment with the extracts and glibenclamide (used as standard) as compared to the diabetic controls. Levels of LDL were not altered. In conclusion, our results showed that the plant extracts when administered by gavage may reduce glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol levels. These results suggest the validity of the clinical use of B. forficata in the treatment of diabetes mellitus type II.

. The liquid-liquid extraction with the low temperature partition technique was developed for the analysis of four pyrethroids in water by CG. Using a factorial design the extraction technique was optimised evaluating the effect of the variables ionic strength, contact time and proportion between sample and solvent volumes. The validation parameters sensitivity, precision, accuracy and detection and quantification limits were evaluated. INTRODUÇÃOPiretróides são inseticidas sintéticos, que apresentam estruturas semelhantes à piretrina. A piretrina, componente ativo extraído das flores do Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium, tem sido utilizada há mais de dois séculos no controle de inúmeras espécies de insetos. Economicamente, as piretrinas constituíram-se no inseticida ideal em função de ser praticamente não tóxico para mamíferos, ter amplo espectro de atividade, apresentar baixo poder residual e alta eficiência em doses baixas 1 . Em razão disso, é relativamente grande o uso de piretróides no controle de pestes em ambientes domésticos com possíveis riscos de contaminação do homem 2 . De acordo com o "International Programme on Chemical Safety" (IPCS) 3 , os piretróides cipermetrina, deltametrina, λ-cialotrina e permetrina são classificados como moderadamente tó-xicos. Apesar da baixa toxicidade verificada para mamíferos, estudos toxicológicos recentes mostraram que os piretróides estão entre os pesticidas mais tóxicos para organismos aquáticos, como peixes e crustáceos, sendo ainda, altamente tóxicos para abelhas 4 . A fórmula dos piretróides é mostrada na Figura 1, juntamente com os radicais de cada um dos quatro piretróides que foram estudados.Várias técnicas têm sido usadas para determinação e quantificação dos resíduos de piretróides em amostras ambientais. Dentre elas destacam-se a cromatografia gasosa (CG) acoplada a detector seletivo de captura de elétrons (DCE) 1,5,6 ou acoplada ao detector de massas no modo de seleção de íons 7-9 e a cromatografia líquida de alta eficiência (CLAE), acoplada a detector ultravioleta (UV) 10 . Atualmente são encontrados inúmeros trabalhos de monitoramento de resíduos de piretróides em águas 4,11,12 , solos [13][14][15] e alimentos 10,16,17 utilizando as mais diversas técnicas de extração e análise.Nos últimos anos, foram desenvolvidas técnicas de extração e purificação de resíduos de piretróides, com uma demanda menor de solventes, como a extração em fase sólida 11-13 e a microextração em fase sólida 4,18 . Apesar do desenvolvimento das técnicas de extração e microextração em fase sólida, a extração líquido-líquido continua sendo a mais empregada por ser uma técnica simples, que não exige instrumentação sofisticada, e de fácil execução. A B S T R A C TThe effects of the forage cactus sorghum configuration and different irrigation depths on the growth, water use and efficiency of the forage cactus production system were investigated in this study. The experiment was conducted in the municipality of Serra Talhada, Pernambuco State, Brazil, between the years 2012 and 2013. Forage cactus was distributed in randomized blocks with factorial scheme and four replicates, in split plots (5 x 2), with five irrigation depths (0, 8.75, 17.5, 26.25 and 35% of the reference evapotranspiration, ET 0 ) and two cropping systems (forage cactus monocropping and forage cactus sorghum intercropping). Crop evapotranspiration was calculated through soil water balance. The ratio between crop and reference evapotranspiration, and land use and water use efficiencies, were estimated. Irrigation depths and the intercropping affected only forage cactus canopy width and cladode biomass. The ratio between crop and reference evapotranspiration increased with the increase of irrigation depths, while the highest water use efficiency based on dry matter occurred at irrigation depths higher than 1,096 mm year -1 in the intercropping (21.8 ± 6.8 kg ha -1 mm -1 ). Irrigation depths did not affect land use efficiency (0.83). Water depths from 1,096 to 1,202 mm year -1 are recommended in the forage cactus sorghum system. Crescimento, consumo de água e eficiência do consórcio palma-sorgo sob diferentes lâminas de água R E S U M OOs efeitos da configuração palma-sorgo e de diferentes lâminas de irrigação sobre o crescimento, consumo de água e eficiência do sistema de produção da palma foram investigados neste estudo. O experimento foi conduzido em Serra Talhada, PE, entre os anos de 2012 e 2013, com a palma disposta em blocos ao acaso, quatro repetições, em parcelas subdivididas (5 x 2) de cinco lâminas (0, 8,75, 17,5, 26,25 e 35% da evapotranspiração de referência) e dois sistemas de cultivo (palma exclusiva e consórcio palma-sorgo). A evapotranspiração real da cultura foi calculada por meio do balanço de água no solo. Estimou-se a razão evapotranspiração real e de referência, além das eficiências do uso da água e da terra. As lâminas de irrigação e a adoção do consórcio afetaram apenas a largura do dossel e a biomassa dos cladódios da palma forrageira. A razão evapotranspiração real e de referência aumentou com o incremento da lâmina de irrigação, enquanto as maiores eficiências do uso da água com base na massa seca ocorreram nas lâminas de água superiores a 1.096 mm ano -1 no consórcio (21,8 ± 6,8 kg ha -1 mm -1 ). As lâminas de irrigação não afetaram a eficiência do uso da terra (0,83). No sistema palma-sorgo, recomendam-se lâminas de água entre 1.096 e 1.202 mm ano -1 .
