The aim of this work was to study the feeding habits of the predator Brontocoris tabidus (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) analyzing the salivary gland complex (SGC). The SGC was dissected and subjected to histological analyses and biochemical assays. Results showed that a pair of bilobed principal salivary glands and one pair of tubular accessory salivary glands form the SGC and different parts of salivary gland synthesizes similar substances.Lipases, α-amylase and trypsin-like enzymes were detected at both lobes of the principal salivary gland. These data together with observations related to the predator's diet suggested that it could be considered an obligate zoophytophagous.
-Species of Scolytidae and Platypodidae were evaluated in a plantation using a clone of Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Wood disks with galleries were taken from 15 eucalyptus trees between 0.5 and 1.5 m height. After collection, all trees attacked were burned. Woodborers obtained from these disks were identified as Premnobius cavipennis, Premnobius ambitiosus, Dryocoetoides cristatus (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) and Euplatypus parallelus (Coleoptera: Platypodidae). This is the first report of D. cristatus, a Brazilian native species, damaging eucalyptus, which shows its adaptation to this plant.Index terms: Premnobius, Dryocoetoides, Euplatypus.
Plantas de Eucalyptus atacadas por Scolytidae e Platypodidae (Coleoptera)Resumo -O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o ataque de Scolytidae e Platypodidae em talhão de clone Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla na região de Montes Claros, Estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil. Discos de madeira com galerias desses insetos foram retirados de 15 árvores de eucalipto entre 0,5 e 1,5 m de altura. Após a coleta deste material, as árvores atacadas foram queimadas. Os indivíduos da ordem Coleoptera obtidos desses discos foram identificados como Premnobius cavipennis, Premnobius ambitiosus e Dryocoetoides cristatus (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) e Euplatypus parallelus (Coleoptera: Platypodidae). O ataque de D. cristatus, espécie nativa do Brasil, ao eucalipto ainda não havia sido relatado, o que mostra sua adaptação a essa planta.Termos para indexação: Premnobius, Dryocoetoides, Euplatypus.
Wood borer species of the families Euplatypodidae and Scolytidae were observed attacking trees of Pinus sp. in the Municipality of Ribas do Rio Pardo, state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, in March 2000. This plantation had been previously burned in an accidental fire in January 2000, causing the trees to become partially or totally unhealthy, rendering them more susceptible to attack of these pests. Galleries of these wood borers were opened with a chisel to observe parameters such as their direction and form of these galleries. Species observed as wood borers of Pinus sp. were Euplatypus parallelus, Euplatypus sp. (Coleoptera: Euplatypodidae) and Xyleborus affinis (Coleoptera: Scolytidae). Foi observada a presença de coleobrocas das famílias Euplatypodidae e Scolytidae atacando árvores de Pinus sp. no município de Ribas do Rio Pardo, Mato Grosso do Sul, em março de 2000. Este plantio havia sido queimado em incêndio acidental em janeiro daquele ano, o que tornou as árvores parcial ou totalmente estressadas e mais suscetíveis ao ataque dessas pragas. As galerias de ambas as espécies de coleobrocas foram abertas com formão, para observar parâmetros como o seu direcionamento e a sua forma. As espécies broqueadoras observadas foram Euplatypus parallelus, Euplatypus sp. (Coleoptera: Euplatypodidae) e Xyleborus affinis (Coleoptera: Scolytidae)
After years of attempting to address rising turbidity in its water supplies with engineering solutions, Vitória, the capital of the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo, is turning to watershed conservation. Degradation in the watershed of the Santa Maria da Vitória River, from which Vitória obtains almost 40% of its water supplies, has resulted in a significant increase in water treatment costs; investments in improved filtration have only managed to slow. To reduce erosion in the watershed, a program of Payments for Environmental Services (PES) is being implemented, initially in a micro-watershed that has been identified as contributing disproportionately to sediment loads. This paper estimates the impact of watershed degradation on Vitória’s water treatment costs and undertakes a cost–benefit analysis of the benefits of watershed conservation. These interventions will benefit both downstream water users, in the form of lower water treatment costs, and upstream landholders, in the form of higher income from farming activities and payments for conservation.
