O diagnóstico genético pré-implantacional (DGPI) é realizado em embriões obtidos pela técnica de fertilização in vitro antes desua implantação no útero, permitindo o diagnóstico de um grande número de doenças genéticas nestes embriões. Esta técnica émenos invasiva do que diversas técnicas de diagnóstico pré-natal conhecidas como a amniocentese, a cordocentese e a retiradade amostras de células das vilosidades coriônicas. Recentemente tem sido indicado também como ferramenta de terapia gênica,visando à realização de transplante de medula óssea em crianças que não encontram um doador compatível. Apesar das limitaçõesdas técnicas de diagnóstico e da dificuldade de acesso devido ao seu alto custo, o DGPI tem se mostrado eficiente e a procura pelatécnica vem crescendo, assim como suas possibilidades de aplicação. Com o crescimento da procura pelo DGPI e com as novaspossibilidades proporcionadas por esta técnica surgem diversas questões quanto a suas aplicações e também quanto às implicaçõeséticas envolvidas no seu uso. No Brasil, não há legislação federal específica e o DGPI é regulamentado pelas resoluções do ConselhoFederal de Medicina. Além disso, faltam políticas públicas que permitam um maior acesso da população de baixa renda a esta técnica. <br />
