Este trabajo ofrece una aproximación a la Historia menos atajante, como parte de un estudio preliminar a su edición crítica. El texto en cuestión es un relato de las luchas entre las familias de Castro y Lara durante la minoridad de Alfonso VIII de Castilla (1158-69) interpolado en varias de las crónicas derivadas de la Estoria de España de Alfonso X el Sabio, incluyendo la Crónica de Castilla, la Crónica de veinte reyes, la Crónica ocampiana y, especialmente, el manuscrito 6441 (U') de la Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid, testimonio fragmentario de la crónica resumida por don Juan Manuel en su Crónica abreviada (c. 1324). Mediante un examen comparativo se pretende establecer la relación entre los distintos testimonios de la Historia menos atajante e identificar las sucesivas etapas compilatorias presentes en el texto recibido. También se ensayará un análisis narratológico del texto, haciendo especial hincapié en las tensiones patentes en él, producto de las divergentes orientaciones ideológicas de las sucesivas manos que intervinieron en su elaboración. Por último, se ofrecerá una caracterización de la obra como vestigio de la existencia a finales del siglo xii y durante el siglo xiii de un vibrante género dedicado a rememorar las gestas de los linajes nobiliarios castellanos. Las composiciones pertenecientes a dicho género (cantares de gesta, leyendas, romances e incluso historias escritas) sólo nos son conocidas, en su mayor parte, gracias a su incorporación al texto de la Estoria de España. Resulta, por tanto, paradójico, que la obra alfonsí, surgida en gran medida como un intento del discurso ideológico de la corona por imponer un modelo único de historia que neutralizase la difusión de otras versiones alternativas del pasado, se convirtiese en el vehículo por el que estas 'historias nobiliarias' han llegado hasta nosotros.palabras clave Alfonso X, crónica, Crónica manuelina, Estoria de España, historiografía

Una de las últimas metamorfosis sufridas en el transcurso de los siglos bajomedievales por la Estoria de España (EE) mandada componer por Alfonso x es la que representan las distintas versiones de la Estoria del fecho de los godos (Efg), crónica compilada en el siglo xv y muy difundida, a juzgar por el número de manuscritos conservados y por su empleo como fuente por varios historiadores de finales del XV y del xvi. En este trabajo me propongo complementar el conocimiento que sobre este modelo cronístico tenemos gracias, sobre todo, a la labor de Diego Catalán, autor en 1966 del estudio definitivo sobre esta obra'. También quisiera ofrecer una serie de reflexiones respecto al valor que este tipo de compilaciones tardías pueden tener, no ya como testimonio del texto original alfonsi, sino como fuente de datos sobre las prácticas y métodos de trabajo de los compiladores y copistas de crónicas y, en definitiva, sobre la difusión del discimo histórico durante el final de la edad media y el principio de la moderna."Estorias del fecho de los godos" es la denominación que Diego Catalán asigna a dos modelos cronísticos caracterizados por combinar el texto de *L', ejemplar perdido de una "Crónica general" representada también por el ms. L (=1298, Bibl.
