Interdisciplinaridade. abstRact:This article aims to start a debate on the relation between literature and cities as an interdisciplinary research field. It is developed based a bibliographic review on such relation and, guided by a selection of two Brazilian authors, Machado de Assis and Graciliano Ramos, analyses how the national academic production in dissertations and thesis -defended thought 2000 to 2015 -refers and takes advantage from this rich interdisciplinary. Additionally, we take the work and public life of Graciliano Ramos to identify possible methodological paths in such interdisciplinary field. In the search of researches that combine interests in literature and cities, we could observe that, on one side, there is a consensus on the importance of different multi scientific approaches; on the other it is reduced the number of researches adopting this procedure. More than that, it is possible to conclude that areas closely connected to urbanism, like urban management, design, architecture and planning are absent in the restrict number of researches considered appropriated for this discussion.
This paper investigates the circulation of ideas regarding the city among selected countries in Latin America. It discusses convergences between academic and scientific institutions and investigative weakness in partnerships between Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico. It identifies two historical moments: one of vertical dialogues between Latin America and central countries in the elaboration of urban plans (20th century) and another of contemporary academic exchange signalling a horizontal dialogue that is fragile and sporadic but distinct from those observed in the past. Empirical reference is obtained from the analysis of scientific events and papers published by distinguished post-graduate programs concerning urban topics in selected countries, during the time frame of 2000–2015. The methodological approach is based on a bibliographic review and content analysis. Results indicate that the old “one-way” of transfer of urban planning ideas from central countries to Latin America is changing; slowly, the continent has been growing more independent in terms of knowledge creation and circulation.
No primeiro volume do periódico The New York Review of Books, hoje referência fundamental no cenário da crítica editorial mundial, os editores Epstein e Silvers lançavam dúvida sobre o interesse do público leitor em resenhas e críticas, a despeito de seguros da importância de tais trabalhos:The hope of the editors is to suggest, however imperfectly, some of the qualities which a responsible literary journal should have and to discover whether there is, in America, not only the need for such a review but the demand for one (EPSTEIN;SILVERS, 1963).O pouco espaço dedicado pela maioria dos periódicos científicos à forma literária da resenha pode, de fato, justificar-se por um possível reduzido interesse do leitor. Martin (2000, p. 202) sintetiza a ideia de baixa ocorrência do debate e ainda sugere um despropósito no seu formato mais usual:Scientific debates are an artificial process of acting rather than a spontaneous exchange of ideas. Protagonists carefully rehearse their arguments, often by trying them out on friends or advisers, exploring possible lines of argument and rejecting those that don't work well in public forums. The aim in a debate is to "win," namely to be recognised as having superior arguments, rather than to open a dialogue, explore commonalities or modify one's position. *
