Development and reproduction of the Mediterranean fruit fly in persimmon, apple, peach and grapeAbstract -The objective of this work was to describe the development and reproduction of Ceratitis capitata (Diptera: Tephritidae) in fruit of 'Fuyu' persimmon, 'Gala' apple, 'Maciel' peach and 'Italy' grape. Evaluations were made for: egg duration and viability, duration of larval stage, pupa weight, pupal duration and viability, duration of egg-adult period, sex ratio, pre-oviposition and oviposition periods, daily and total fecundity, and longevity of males and females. The longer duration of the egg-adult period occurred in apple, due to the increase in larval stage, followed by grape, persimmon and peach. Larvae fed on peach had higher average pupal weight. The highest pupal viability was recorded in peach and was equivalent to that of grape and persimmon. The pre-oviposition period was higher for females from apple and grape. Females from peach had longer oviposition period, and higher daily average fecundity and total fertility. The longevity of adults was higher in insects reared on peach. Peach fruit are more suitable for the development of C. capitata, in comparison to persimmon, apple and grape.
Grapholita molesta (Busck) is one of the main pests of apple trees, and lives on their shoots and fruits. In southern Brazil, the insect is also found on old branches and structures similar to aerial roots, so-called burrknots. This study evaluated the development and population growth potential of G. molesta fed on burrknots, compared with apple fruit cultivar. Fuji and a corn-based artiÞcial diet. The study was carried out in the laboratory under controlled temperature (25 Ϯ 1ЊC), relative humidity (70 Ϯ 10%), and photophase (16 h). The biological parameters of the immature and adult stages were determined, and a fertility life table was constructed. Insects fed on burrknots showed a longer duration and a lower survival for the egg-to-adult period (29.3 d and 22.5%) compared with those that fed on apples (25.1 d and 30.0%) and artiÞcial diet (23.9 d and 54.8%). Insects reared on aerial roots had a lower pupal weight (10.0 mg) compared with those reared on either artiÞcial diet (13.7 mg) or apple cultivar. Fuji (12.4 mg). The fecundity and longevity of males and females did not signiÞcantly differ for the three foods. Based on the fertility life table, insects reared on burrknots had the lowest net reproductive rate (Ro), intrinsic rate of population growth (r m ) and Þnite rate of increase (), compared with insects reared on artiÞcial diet and apple fruit. Burrknots support the development of the complete cycle of G. molesta, which allows populations of this pest to increase in orchards.
Biology of South American fruit fly in blueberry, blackberry, strawberry guava, and Surinam cherry cropsAbstract -The objective of this work was to describe the biology of Anastrepha fraterculus in blueberry (Vaccinium ashei), blackberry (Rubus spp.), strawberry guava (Psidium cattleyanum) and Surinam cherry (Eugenia uniflora) fruits. The experiment was carried out in laboratory under controlled conditions of temperature (25±2ºC), relative humidity (70±10%), and photophase (12 hours) to determine insect biological parameters in immature and adult development stages. Anastrepha fraterculus finishes its biological cycle in all studied hosts; however, the Brazilian native fruits (strawberry guava and Surinam cherry) provide better conditions for development of the insect. Biological parameters determined for immature development stadium were similar in the four hosts. Insects reared in Surinam cherry and strawberry guava showed, in the adult phase, longer oviposition period, higher fecundity, and higher female longevity in comparison to insects reared in blueberry and blackberry. Oviposition daily rhythm is longer and more uniform in insects reared in strawberry guava and Surinam cherry fruits, which shows that A. fraterculus is better adapted to native fruits from Southern Brazil.
INTERACTION OF INJURIES CAUSED BY APPLE SCAB (Venturia inaequalis) IN THE INFESTATION CAPACITY OF FRUITS BY CATERPILLAR Grapholita molesta (LEPIDOPTERA: TORTRICIDAE)ABSTRACT -Pest monitoring performed in apple orchards showed a greater infestation of the oriental fruit moth (Grapholita molesta) in fruits from orchards with higher incidence of injuries caused by apple scab (Venturia inaequalis). To validate this observation, it was conducted in laboratory an experiment to investigate the influence of apple scab lesions in fruits on the ability of infestation by G. molesta. Apple fruits (n = 200) of the Gala variety with symptoms of scabies (n = 100) and healthy fruits (n = 100) were used. A first instar larvae was inoculated in each fruit and the evaluation was performed 10 days after infestation, determining the number of larvae that were able to penetrate the fruit. There were significant differences in the penetration capacity of larvae associated with lesions of scabies (87%) when compared with healthy fruits (61%). It is concluded that apple fruit Gala attacked by Venturia inaequalis are more infested by first instar larvae of Grapholita molesta.
