A vida de uma mãe sofre mudanças significativas depois que seu filho / filha é diagnosticado com câncer. O objetivo do estudo é apreender as experiências das mães que acompanham seus filhos no tratamento do câncer. Estudo qualitativo desenvolvido com oito mães que acompanham as crianças em uma casa de apoio, na cidade de Recife, Pernambuco, Brasil. A coleta de dados foi realizada através de uma entrevista semi-estruturada no período de junho a julho de 2014. Para a análise dos dados, utilizou-se o método de interpretação dos significados, com base na perspectiva hermenêutica-dialética. Para lidar com o longo dia de tratamento, muitas mães precisam sair do trabalho e / ou estudar, competir por repercussões sobre as condições financeiras, bem como exigências de apoio emocional da família. O estudo revelou as singularidades da experiência das mães de crianças com câncer, com relatos de sentimentos de medo, incertezas, angústia, solidão e sofrimento e formas de enfrentar a situação para proteger a dedicação e o cuidado que a criança exige. . Conclui-se que, em vista do esgotamento físico e mental experimentado pelas mães, este estudo revela a necessidade de profissionais de saúde, sendo sensível às necessidades de suporte emocional, além de desenvolver competências emocionais para um atendimento integral da criança e da família, ligado a uma rede de apoio socio-afetivo, constituindo mecanismos de confronto para as mães.
