The research findings revealed that patients with chronic pancreatitis had lower concentrations of paracetamol. Therefore, it may be necessary to apply additional analgesic therapy. Moreover, we observed enhanced glucuronidation in our patients.
ABSTRACTFolic acid (folacin, folate, vitamin B 9 ) is a vital vitamin for the proper functioning of the human body. Folates are found in foodstuffs of plant and animal origin. Among the plant products their high content can be found in raw and short cooked green leafy vegetables. Among the products of animal origin its high amount is found in offal. Low intake of folic acid in the diet and, as a result, too low a level of this vitamin in the body can be a substrate for many diseases. Elderly people are exposed to folate defi ciencies not only because of dietary errors. The cause may be reduced absorption or lifestyle factors. The most serious health consequences for older people are associated with high levels of homocysteine in blood, which is the reason for cognitive impairment, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Providing the body's required amount of folate in the diet is problematic since the long-term storage of food products that are its natural source and their technological processing affect negatively the amount and bioavailability of this vitamin. It is therefore necessary to use supplementation.
ABSTRACTSarcopenia is defi ned as a loss of a muscle tissue progressing with age. It contributes to the deterioration of the muscle function, increasing the risk of falls, fractures, the severity of disability and dependence on others. On account of the increased number of elderly people, also in the demographic structure of the Polish society, sarcopenia requires attention. It is recognized that the prevalence of sarcopenia is underestimated. Neglecting this problem can be the reason for serious consequences, such as the muscle weakness or increase in the risk of falls and related complications. Also, for the entire health system it has signifi cant economic importance. Its early detection should be a priority in geriatric care. The article presents the genesis of the concept, clinical symptoms, complications, techniques useful in the evaluation of muscle mass and therapeutic methods. KEYWORDS: sarcopenia, aged, geriatrics.
