SUMMARYMarota breed goat is part of the Brazilian genetic patrimony, consisting by animals highly adapted to semi-arid region. This study evaluated genetic structure of Marota breed from Embrapa Meio Norte conservation nucleus. Pedigree records of 663 animals, which were born from 1995 to 2003, were used for population parameters estimation. Inbreeding coefficient (F) and average relationship coefficient (AR) of the population were 0.11% and 0.84% respectively. Generation interval (IEG) was 5.28 years and average effective size (N e ) per generation was 222 animals; being the effective number of founder animals ( ) and ancestral ( ) was the same (48). Among 214 ancestors evaluated, just 22 of them were responsible for 50% of the population genetic variability, which indicate loss of original genes. This study shows low contribution of the founder animals among the generations. Wright inbreeding coefficient indicates population subdivision in lineages. Inbreeding and average relationship coefficient (AR) are low in the evaluated herd.
SUMMARYThe purpose of this research was to evaluate some qualitative and quantitative traits related to coat color, morphometric measurements, growth performance, weight daily gain, carcass and meat of Curraleiro Pé-Duro cattle (Bos taurus taurus, CPD). Data were obtained from the in situ conservation nucleus which belongs to the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA), located in the experimental farm in Piauí State, Brazil. The records were analyzed by least square method (Proc GLM) enclosed in SAS statistical package. Used models varied according to the analysis as well as the significance levels of environmental effects and their interactions. Growth performance means, among males and females, for birth (PN), weaning (P210), yearling (P365), 18 months (P18m), 24 months (P24m) and mature weight (PA) were 21 and 19; 69 and 64, 99 and 93, 137 and 127, 168 and 152, 285 and 210 kg, respectively. The herd presented variations in coat colors with a predominance of brown-red followed by yellow, been darker in front body extremities, especially in mature animals. Morphometric measurements, evaluations of PALAVRAS CHAVE ADICIONAISBos taurus adaptado aos trópicos.
ABSTRACT. Curraleiro Pé-Duro is a rustic bovine taurine breed found in Northeast of Brazil; this breed has decreased its production potentially in order to adapt to the region environment conditions. Consequently, it is under risk of extinction and is maintained at a preservation center in Piauí State, Brazil, as a source of genetic material adapted to local conditions. We analyzed genetic variability of this breed using microsatellite markers. Sixty animals were genotyped using 11 microsatellite loci normally used for paternity tests in bovines. The observed number of alleles ranged from 5 to 9, and the effective number of alleles ranged from 2.01 to 4.64. The Shannon index ranged from 0.949 to 1.669. The expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.510 to 0.798. Polymorphism information content values ranged from 0.453 to 0.751. Divergence from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was significant and the mean F IS value was 0.010. We conclude that this breed still has some genetic diversity, but with evident risk due to genetic drift caused by current breeding management. It will be necessary to insert animals from other herds to obtain the desired level of genetic variability in this breed remnant.
