The deposition of "polydopamine" films, from an aqueous solution containing dopamine or other catecholamines, constitutes a new and versatile way to functionalize solid-liquid interfaces. Indeed such films can be deposited on almost all kinds of materials. Their deposition kinetics does not depend markedly on the surface chemistry of the substrate, and the films can reach thickness of a few tens of nanometers in a single reaction step. Up to now, even if a lot is known about the oxidation mechanism of dopamine in solution, only little information is available to describe the deposition mechanism on surfaces either by oxidation in solution or by electrodeposition. The deposition kinetics of melanin was only investigated from dopamine solutions using oxygen or ammonium persulfate as an oxidant and from a tris(hydroxymethyl) aminomethane (Tris) containing buffer solutions at pH 8.5. Many other oxidants could be used, and the buffer agent containing a primary amine group may influence the deposition process. Herein we show that the deposition kinetics of melanin from dopamine containing buffers at pH 8.5 can be markedly modified using Cu(2+) instead of O2 as an oxidant: the deposition kinetics remains linear up to thicknesses of more than 70 nm, whereas the film growth stops at 45 ± 5 nm in the presence of 02. In addition, the films prepared from Cu(2+) containing solutions display an absorption spectrum with defined peaks at 320 and 370 nm, which are absent in the spectra of films prepared in oxygenated solutions. The replacement of Tris buffer by phosphate buffer also has a marked effect on the melanin deposition kinetics.
Efficient surface functionalization with polydopamine (PDA) films can be easily achieved on virtually any object via single immersion in slightly basic dopamine solutions. In such conditions, however, poor homogeneity, low thickness, and long time of reaction are usually the major limitations. Herein, we report a rational entry to the control of PDA deposition via chemical oxidation under slightly acidic conditions (pH 5.0) ensuring inhibition of uncontrolled autoxidation processes to gain insight about the reaction mechanism and the impact of oxidation conditions on PDA structure. Comparative chemical analysis of dopamine oxidation with three different oxidants (ammonium peroxodisulfate, sodium periodate, and copper sulfate) revealed significant differences in the reaction course and allowed selection of periodate for the fast and homogeneous deposition of PDA films with thickness never before reported. Notably, PDA coatings with unprecedented superhydrophilic/superoleophobic properties were obtained under conditions of high periodate concentration due to degradation of quinone units to yield carboxyl functions. Moreover, these films still present biocompatibility and metal cation reduction properties. Overall, these results provide a novel rational methodology to tailor PDA coatings for technological applications based on periodate control over dopamine polymerization and postsynthetic functional group modification
The fastest growth pattern of layer-by-layer (LBL) assembled films is exponential LBL (e-LBL), which has both fundamental and practical importance. It is associated with "in-and-out" diffusion of flexible polymers and thus was considered to be impossible for films containing clay sheets with strong barrier function, preventing diffusion. Here, we demonstrate that e-LBL for inorganic sheets is possible in a complex tricomponent film of poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI), poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), and Na(+)-montmorillonite (MTM). This system displayed clear e-LBL patterns in terms of both initial accumulation of materials and unusually thick individual bilayers later in the deposition process with film thicknesses reaching 200 microm for films composed of 200 pairs of layers. Successful incorporation of MTM layers was observed by scanning electron microscopy and thermo-gravimetric analysis. Surprisingly, the growth rate was found to be nearly identical in films with and without clay layers, which suggests fast permeation/reptation of polyelectrolytes between the nanosheets during the "in-and-out" diffusion of polymer. In considering these findings, e-LBL growth property is expected for a wide array of available inorganic nanoscale components and have a potential to greatly expand the e-LBL field and LBL field altogether. The large thickness and rapid growth of the films affords fast preparation of nanostructured materials which is essential for multiple practical applications ranging from optical devices to ultrastrong composites.
