Brazil has a monitoring system to track annual forest conversion in the Amazon and most recently to monitor the Cerrado biome. However, there is still a gap of annual land use and land cover (LULC) information in all Brazilian biomes in the country. Existing countrywide efforts to map land use and land cover lack regularly updates and high spatial resolution time-series data to better understand historical land use and land cover dynamics, and the subsequent impacts in the country biomes. In this study, we described a novel approach and the results achieved by a multi-disciplinary network called MapBiomas to reconstruct annual land use and land cover information between 1985 and 2017 for Brazil, based on random forest applied to Landsat archive using Google Earth Engine. We mapped five major classes: forest, non-forest natural formation, farming, non-vegetated areas, and water. These classes were broken into two sub-classification levels leading to the most comprehensive and detailed mapping for the country at a 30 m pixel resolution. The average overall accuracy of the land use and land cover time-series, based on a stratified random sample of 75,000 pixel locations, was 89% ranging from 73 to 95% in the biomes. The 33 years of LULC change data series revealed that Brazil lost 71 Mha of natural vegetation, mostly to cattle ranching and agriculture activities. Pasture expanded by 46% from 1985 to 2017, and agriculture by 172%, mostly replacing old pasture fields. We also identified that 86 Mha of the converted native vegetation was undergoing some level of regrowth. Several applications of the MapBiomas dataset are underway, suggesting that reconstructing historical land use and land cover change maps is useful for advancing the science and to guide social, economic and environmental policy decision-making processes in Brazil.

Switchable, continuous, complex-amplitude modulation is demonstrated with two cascaded, twisted nematic liquid-crystal televisions (LCTV's), both operating in phase- and amplitude-coupled modulation modes. The condition for full-range complex modulation is that one of the LCTV's must provide a 2π-range phase modulation. A look-up table encoding method is proposed that permits the compensation of phase-amplitude coupling and nonlinearity in the two individual LCTV modulations. Experimental techniques for determining the LCTV-device parameters, for maximizing the phase-mostly modulation range and the amplitude-mostly modulation contrast, and for testing the complex-amplitude modulation are developed. Optical complex-amplitude Fresnel holograms are shown.

Knowledge of the geographic distribution of plants is essential to underpin the understanding of global biodiversity patterns. Vascular epiphytes are important components of diversity and functionality of Neotropical forests but, unlike their terrestrial counterparts, they are under-represented in large-scale diversity and biogeographic analyses. This is the case for the Atlantic Forest - one of the most diverse and threatened biomes worldwide. We provide the first comprehensive species list of Atlantic Forest vascular epiphytes; their endemism patterns and threatened species occurrence have also been analyzed. A list with 2,256 species of (hemi-)epiphytes - distributed in 240 genera and 33 families - is presented based on the updated Brazilian Flora Checklist. This represents more than 15% of the total vascular plant richness in the Atlantic Forest. Moreover, 256 species are included on the Brazilian Red List. More than 93% of the overall richness is concentrated in ten families, with 73% represented by Orchidaceae and Bromeliaceae species alone. A total of 78% of epiphytic species are endemic to the Atlantic Forest, in contrast to overall vascular plant endemism in this biome estimated at 57%. Among the non-endemics, 13% of epiphytic species also occur either in the Amazon or in the Cerrado - the other two largest biomes of Brazil – and only 8% are found in two or more Brazilian biomes. This pattern of endemism, in addition to available dated phylogenies of some genera, indicate the dominance of recent radiations of epiphytic groups in the Atlantic Forest, showing that the majority of divergences dating from the Pliocene onwards are similar to those that were recently reported for other Neotropical plants.

ResumoO presente estudo teve como objetivo caracterizar a flora fanerogâmica da região da Serra Negra localizada no sul da Zona da Mata de Minas Gerais, entre os municípios de Lima Duarte, Rio Preto, Santa Bárbara do Monte Verde e Olaria. Embora considerada de importância biológica alta, esta região não possui nenhum registro anterior de dados florísticos, o que levou ao desenvolvimento deste levantamento, durante o período de 2003 a 2010. A vegetação é caracterizada por um mosaico de formações florestais e campestres onde se destacam os campos rupestres e florestas nebulares em altitudes que variam de 1300 a ca. 1700 m. Um total de 1033 espécies foi encontrado, distribuídas em 469 gêneros e 121 famílias sendo as mais representativas Orchidaceae (115 spp.), Asteraceae 54 spp.), Melastomataceae (56 spp.), Myrtaceae (53 spp.), Fabaceae, Poaceae e Rubiaceae (48 spp. cada), Bromeliaceae (43 spp.), Solanaceae (38 spp.) e Piperaceae (33 spp). Novos registros e endemismos para a flora mineira foram encontrados e 58 espécies estão citadas na lista de espécies ameaçadas de Minas Gerais. Although this region is considered of high biological importance, it has no previous record of floristic data, which led to the development of this survey, during the period 2003 to 2010. The vegetation is characterized by a mosaic of forests and grassland, especially cloud forests and "campos rupestres" (rocky grasslands), occurring at altitudes between 1300 to 1700 m. A total of 1033 species was recorded, distributed in 469 genera and 121 families. The most representative families are Orchidaceae (115 spp.), Asteraceae 54 spp.), Melastomataceae (56 spp.), Myrtaceae (53 spp.), Fabaceae, Poaceae e Rubiaceae (48 spp. cada), Bromeliaceae (43 spp.), Solanaceae (38 spp.) and Piperaceae (33 spp). New records and endemic species to flora of Minas Gerais were found and 58 species are cited in the list of endangered species of Minas Gerais.

INTRODUÇÃO: Joseph Humbertus Pilates criou uma série de exercícios baseados nos movimentos progressivos que o corpo é capaz de executar, os quais envolvem contrações isotônicas e, principalmente, isométricas, no que denominou power house (ou centro de força). OBJETIVOS: Este estudo tem como objetivo geral analisar os aspectos relacionados à importância da estabilização central no método Pilates. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Foi realizada uma revisão sistemática sobre o assunto na biblioteca central e virtual da Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná, e também por meio do site de busca BIREME acessando as bases de dados LILACS, PUB MED, CAPES e MEDLINE. A pesquisa abrangeu livros, revistas, periódicos publicados entre 2000 e 2010, e os descritores utilizados para a busca foram pilates e core. RESULTADOS: Concluiu-se que a estabilização central ajuda o indivíduo a obter ganhos de força, controle neuromuscular, potência e resistência muscular, facilitando um equilibrado funcionamento muscular. CONCLUSÃO: Embora seja necessária uma bibliografia mais extensa, pode-se verificar que a estabilização central no Pilates é importante para o equilíbrio de carga apropriado dentro da coluna vertebral, pélvis.

Abstract

Lower maternal cobalamin concentrations are associated with higher tHcy and lower SAM:SAH in newborns. Because SAM:SAH is closely linked with the activity of numerous enzymatic methylation reactions, these results suggest that methylation could be impaired in cobalamin-deficient pregnant women and their newborns.
