Palavras-chave: bovinos de corte, Braford, consumo alimentar, conversão alimentar, ganho de peso Corn (Zea mays, L.) Cutting Height during Silage Processing for Young Beef Cattle ProductionABSTRACT -The experiment was conducted with the objective to evaluate the performance of feedlot finished calves, fed with silages of AG-5011 corn hybrid harvested with different cutting height: low cut (20 cm) and high cut (42 cm). Twelve Braford calves with an average age of seven months and average live weight of 209 kg, were used. The feedlot period was 126 days, divided in two periods of the 63 days. The roughage:concentrate ratio was 60:40 and 50:50 for the first and second periods, respectively. The high cut silage showed higher IVOMD (66.67 vs 58.60%) and lower NDF (41.47 vs 47.80%). Significant interaction was observed between cutting height and evaluation period for dry matter intake (DMI) expressed per 100 kg of live weight and per unit of metabolic weight, digestible energy intake (DEI), weight gain (ADG), feed conversion (FC) and energy efficiency (EE). Animals fed with the high cut silage during the first period presented higher ADG (1.352 vs 1.198 kg) and better FC (4.82 vs 5.39 kg of DM/kg LW) than animals fed with the low cut silage. However, with the reduction of the roughage:concentrate ratio to 50:50 during the second per...
Palavras-chave: consumo de matéria seca, eficiência alimentar, ionóforo, fêmeas de descarte Feedlot Performance of Cull Cows and Heifers Fed Diets with or without MonensinABSTRACT -Feedlot parameters of two categories of cull females, cows and heifers, fed two diets, with and without monensin, were studied. The daily amount of monensin supplied was 150 mg/animal. The roughage:concentrate ratio was 65:35. The roughage used was sorghum silage. The inclusion of monensin to the diet caused a significant reduction of the daily voluntary dry matter intake (DDMI), which was more pronounced for the cows (9.1%) than for the heifers (1.7%). The animal category x diet interaction affected significantly the average daily weight gain (ADG). Monensin caused a slight increase in heifers ADG (1.92 vs 1.86 kg) while for the cows it reduced the ADG (1.56 vs 1.74 kg). Feed:gain ratio (DDMI/ADG) was not affected by monensin. Cows showed a higher DDMI than the heifers. However when DDMI was expressed per 100 kg of live weight and per unit of metabolic weight the difference disappeared. Heifers were more efficient than cows in converting feed into weight gain (6.40 vs 8.28 kg of DM/kg of live weight gain). The cost of feed per quilogram of live weight gain was R$ .66 and .69 for the heifers, and .84 and .74 for the cows, respectively, for the diets that included or not monensin.Key Words: cull female, dry matter intake, food efficiency, ionophore Rev. bras. zootec., 30(6):1801-1812, 2001Introdução O abate de fêmeas de descarte no Brasil representou, em 1999, 41,6% do total de animais abatidos (ANUALPEC, 2000). ABSTRACTThe experiment was conducted with the objective to evaluate the parameters of performance of feedlot calves, fed with three roughage sources: GSWI Alexander grass (Brachiaria plantaginea) silage without inoculante, GSI Alexander grass silage with inoculant and MCSS mixture of corn silage (Zea mays) and sorghum silage (Sorghum bicolor). Thirty-six calves with an average initial live weight of 159kg and average age of seven months, were used. The animals were kept in feedlot during 105 days, divided in five periods of 21 days. The roughage:concentrate ratio was 65:35 for all diets. The use of inoculant in the Alexander grass silage did not affect (P<.05) the variables studied. No significant interaction was observed between roughage source and feedlot period for daily dry matter intake (DMI) and daily digestible energy intake (DEI), expressed per animal (DMID and DEID), per 100kg of live weight (DMIP and DEIP) and per unit of metabolic weight (DMIM and DEIM), for daily weight gain (ADG), for feed conversion (FC) and for energy efficiency (EE). The contrast analysis between the diets with Alexander grass silagem (GSWI+GSI) and MCSS showed that the animals fed with Alexander grass silage had lower DMID (4.99 versus 5.56kg day -1 ) without ...
