Abstract – The theories of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels reverberated in diverse fields, giving margin to different readings. Many hurried to label them as economicists and anti-nature determinists. In ecological and environmental thinking, these interpretations still have many followers; therefore, this article brings a different interpretation of Marxist thought anchored mainly in Guillermo Foladori and John Bellamy Foster, who do not pit the legacy of Marx and Engels against the defense of nature. Instead, they understand Marx and Engels revealed to the world the internal constituents of the social metabolism of capital, the production mode that is most overwhelming for nature, and so they are perfectly compatible as a theoretical mediation to overcome this social system that is putting human survival at risk as it reproduces its antagonisms. Keywords: Marx and ecology; nature in Marx; capital and environment; Marxism; ambientalism.
Abstract: This article exposes elements of Marx's and Engel's methodologies that have a problematic connection with an ecologic-environmental perspective and, mainly using the works of John Bellamy Foster's and Guillermo Foladori's on this link, emphasises the subjacent review of the historical origins of these different ways of thinking. Furthermore, it deals with the recovery of Marx's perspective by Ístvan Mészáros regarding the potential of labour in countering the various political and social demands emerging i n contemporary capitalism. The greatest obstacle to this link is the pretentious neutrality of ecologic-environmental thinking in the face of the contradictions between capital and labour, something that must be overcome by the new specialists interested in this task.
