O desempenho energético das edificações tem sido frequentemente abordado considerando apenas a edificação, apesar da importância do entorno. Assim, este estudo teve como principal objetivo avaliar a influência de variações no entorno sobre o comportamento térmico e energético das edificações. Os procedimentos metodológicos adotados foram: pesquisas no setor cadastral da Prefeitura Municipal, levantamento de campo no recorte urbano em estudo e simulação computacional com o programa DesignBuilder. Com base nos dados levantados, um modelo representativo da realidade construtiva foi elaborado e utilizado como caso base das simulações. Um conjunto de tipologias foi simulado, estas foram determinadas a partir de alterações de variáveis construtivas como proteção solar e coeficiente de absorção da envoltória, assim como, a variável urbana referente ao grau de obstrução do entorno. A variável de análise considerada é a carga necessária para resfriamento. A partir dos resultados observouse que o sombreamento provocado pelo entorno contribui para a redução no consumo de energia para refrigeração, porém nem sempre o balanço é favorável, alguns modelos analisados apresentaram um aumento no consumo de energia com o adensamento do entorno. Os modelos com a proteção solar tipo veneziana nas aberturas apresentaram os melhores resultados.
