This article presents the methodology of Health Promotion Groups, which were conceived as a means of contributing towards developing autonomy, improving living conditions and promoting health. The method is identified as a collective and interdisciplinary health intervention, consisting of a group process. It guides the development of attitudes and behavioral patterns towards continually transforming participants' health levels and living conditions. The Health Promotion Groups are identified within the context of the Sistema Único de Saúde (National Health System) as a means of surpassing the biomedical model. It stimulates the development of actions in which the positive aspects of health are emphasized, while at the same time it can serve to more effectively meet the demands for care for the elderly in health systems.

Objetivo: descrever as internações por condições sensíveis à atenção primária (ICSAP) na região de saúde de São José do Rio Preto, no interior paulista. Métodos: estudo descritivo cuja fonte de dados foi o Sistema de Informações Hospitalares do Sistema Único de Saúde (SIH/SUS) no período 2008-2010. Resultados: o coeficiente de ICSAP dessa região de saúde foi em torno de 13,0/1000 habitantes a cada ano; os cinco diagnósticos mais frequentes foram insuficiência cardíaca, angina, infecções do aparelho urinário, gastroenterites infecciosas e as doenças cerebrovasculares; doenças do aparelho circulatório foram o diagnóstico principal, registrado em 41,5% do total dessas internações; as ICSAP consumiram R$ 30.370.691,08, correspondendo a 17% do total de gastos com internações nessa região de saúde. Conclusão: a ocorrência de ICSAP, que são potencialmente evitáveis, aponta a necessidade de outras investigações sobre possíveis fatores que estejam interferindo na prestação e resolutividade da atenção primária na região estudada.

Malignant neoplasms may be composed of several cell groups, including cancer stem cells (CSC). These cells have been related with the capacity of metastasis, relapse and resistance to multiple drugs during chemotherapy. This study aims to identify CSC biomarkers and their expression pattern in human head and neck carcinomas. This study was conducted following the PRISMA checklist. The search for articles was carried out in five databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Lilacs and Scielo). The articles found were selected in two phases: 1) reading the titles and / or abstract and 2) reading the full text. At the end, the selected articles were evaluated by QUADAS-2. Most studies evaluated oral neoplastic tissues and, as a control, samples of normal local mucosa. All studies performed immunohistochemistry as a method of immunolocalization and some also applied immunofluorescence. The most commonly used biomarker was CD44. However, other such as Sox2, Oct4, Nestin, Nanog, BMI1, ALDH1, CD133 and CD166 were also found. Several biomarkers were (ALDH1, Sox2, Oct4, ABCB5, AGR2 and TAZ) correlated with clinical characteristics of the tumor, such as staging, tumor size and lymph node metastasis. These data reinforce the CSC theory and favor the use of these biomarkers as possible determinants of prognosis.

Regenerative endodontic procedure (REP) has been proposed as a new approach to treat immature permanent teeth. However, materials used in REP for root canal disinfection or cervical sealing may induce tooth discoloration. Objectives To assess tooth crown’s color after intracanal treatment with triple antibiotic paste (TAP) or calcium hydroxide (CH); cervical sealing with glass ionomer cement (GIC) or mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA); and bleaching with carbamide peroxide.Material and Methods After pulp removal and color spectrophotometer measurement, 50 bovine incisors were divided into 4 experimental groups and one control (untreated). Experiments were performed in phases (Ph). Ph1: TAP (ciprofloxacin, metronidazole, minocycline), TAPM (ciprofloxacin, metronidazole, amoxicillin), DAP (ciprofloxacin, metronidazole), or CH treatment groups. After 1 and 3 days (d); 1, 2, 3 weeks (w); and 1, 2, 3 and 4 months (m), color was measured and medications were removed. Ph2: GIC or MTA cervical sealing, each using half of the specimens from each group. Color was assessed after 1d, 3d; 1w, 2w, 3w; 1m and 2m. Ph3: Two bleaching sessions, each followed by color measurement. Data were analyzed with ANOVA and post-hoc Holm-Sidak method.Results Ph1: Specimens of TAP group presented higher color alteration (ΔE) mean than those of TAPM group. No significant difference was found among TAP or TAPM and CH, DAP or Control groups. Ph2: cervical sealing materials showed no influence on color alteration. Ph3: Different ΔE means (from different groups), prior to bleaching, became equivalent after one bleaching session.Conclusions TAP induces higher color alteration than TAPM; color alteration increases over time; cervical sealing material has no influence on color alteration; and, dental bleaching was able to recover, at least partially, the tooth crown’s color.

OBJECTIVETo analyze physical structure, working conditions of health professionals and outline of the procedures established in prisons.METHODSWe analyzed 34 provisional detention centers and 69 male and six female prison units in the state of Sao Paulo, Southeastern Brazil, in 2009. A self-applied instrument was developed to collect quantitative data on the characteristics of health care structure, equipment and personnel in prisons. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) or equivalent non-parametric tests and Chi-square or Fisher’s tests were used to compare categorical and continuous variables, respectively, between the groups.RESULTSThe main problems were delays in the results of laboratory tests and imaging. With respect to the teams, it was observed that a large majority were in conditions close to those proposed by the Bipartite Commission 2013 but without improvement being reflected in the indicators. With respect to the process, more than 60.0% of prisons located in small towns do not have the structural conditions to ensure secondary or tertiary health care for the continuity of treatment.CONCLUSIONSThis profile of prisons in the country can be used for planning and monitoring future actions for the continuous improvement of healthcare processes.

This study investigated the passive avoidance conditioning in zebrafish (Danio rerio). An instrument was developed for measuring escape responses triggered by a conditioned stimulus. This system allowed quantification of latency of crossing from a light to a dark zone. Zebrafish were trained to swim from an illuminated to a dark compartment, where they received a body shock (training session). The proposed methodology was efficient for evaluation of working, short, and long-term memory formation of an aquatic animal model. The possibility of employing memory measurements in toxicity tests, in order to obtain an ecologically meaningful biomarker response, was also analyzed. In this experiment, immediately after the training session, fish were exposed to three arsenic (As(V)) concentrations. After the test session, the brain was removed for biochemical analyses. A control group was kept in tap water. After exposure, animals were submitted to a one-trial inhibitory avoidance test for measurement of long-term memory (LTM). Results from behavioral and biochemical analyses showed that the three As(V) concentrations impaired LTM (p<0.05) and increased protein oxidation, which suggests an amnesic and pro-oxidant effect of As(V). Evaluation of behavior parameters in aquatic models is an important complement in studies concerning the environmental impact of chemical substances.
