Resumo As problemáticas atreladas ao processo de urbanização latino-americano e brasileiro estão presentes em diversas escalas de cidade, como a exclusão e a segregação socioespacial. Este artigo trata de algumas dimensões da desigualdade socioespacial presentes nas áreas periféricas com o propósito de entender as relações entre espaço e sociedade e os modos de apropriação social informal em vazios urbanos periféricos na cidade de Erechim-RS, revelando potencialidades de inclusão de vazios urbanos como estratégia de gestão urbana. Como consequência da pouca atenção às áreas periféricas, com menor acesso à infraestrutura básica e às áreas de convívio social, existem vazios urbanos que, embora estejam abandonados na dinâmica urbana, são apropriados de modo não planejado por meio de práticas sociais informais. As práticas peculiares decorrentes das necessidades de grupos sociais de baixa renda revelam-se como oportunidade de resistência e enfrentamento ao sistema hegemônico e segregador para as populações periféricas. A partir do exemplo de Erechim, pretende-se mostrar a necessidade de o planejamento urbano incorporar essas áreas periféricas pelo potencial dos vazios urbanos, ainda que eventual e precariamente utilizados pelos moradores locais, na qualificação das periferias urbanas de nossas cidades.
