The case-study method of instruction is increasing in popularity and instructors of various scientific disciplines are adopting this method for their courses. Its effectiveness suggests that there is a need for such resources to be used in chemistry education. In this paper we describe this method in detail and present our use of cases in a scientific communication course offered to undergraduate chemistry students at the University of São Paulo. The description of the method and the example of its use may be helpful for faculty members who wish to explore new ways to engage students more deeply in their learning and to reinvigorate their own teachig practice. Keywords: undergraduate education; case studies; chemistry.

This paper describes the use of primary chemistry literature in a fifth-semester physical chemistry course for undergraduate chemistry students. The main goal is to expose students to the primary literature of physical chemistry, demonstrating how they can benefit from using it. The assignment addresses issues in chemical education such as scientific writing, relating lecture material to the real world, and conducting literature searches. The student evaluation of this assignment, consisting of two surveys and one focus group, showed its usefulness. The details of the evaluation instruments and their results are provided. Out of 45 students enrolled in the course, 30 (67%) students completed the assignment. Keywords: graduate education; primary literature; physical chemistry.

The Method of Case Studies has often been employed in higher education, but few initiatives have focused on basic education. This work addressed the production of cases by students from a chemistry teacher training course. The proposal was applied in the discipline of Basic Inorganic Chemistry and aimed to familiarize students with the Method from the preparation of cases focused on basic education. We believe the proposal was efficient in showing future teachers the need to develop teaching strategies that, beyond learning concepts, stimulate students in training skills such as teamwork, critical thinking and decision making. Keywords: case studies; chemistry teaching; teacher training.

Studies have demonstrated the importance of argumentation in science education. Based on this assertion, we have tried to develop argumentative abilities in chemistry undergraduate students through a teaching methodology based on case studies. The process culminated with class presentations by student groups about possible solutions for the cases. To assess the quality of students' argumentation, videotapes of group presentations were collected and analyzed using Toulmin's Argument Pattern (TAP). TAP illustrates the nature of an argument in terms of claims, data, warrants, backings, and rebuttals. The findings of this work support the idea that the case study approach is an effective strategy for enhancing students' ability to argument. Keywords: higher education; argumentation; chemistry. ARGUMENTAÇÃO E ENSINO DE CIÊNCIASA a...
EVALUATION OF LEARNING IN THE CONCEPTION OF TEACHERS OF CHEMISTRY HIGH SCHOOL ABSTRACT:The assessment of learning has been identified as a subject rarely discussed in training courses for teachers, bringing consequences for its effectiveness in the context of the classroom. Thus, in the present work, we seek to investigate how the assessment is understood by teachers of high school chemistry in public schools in the South of Bahia. For data analysis we resort to several studies that discuss the practice of evaluation in schools. Overall, the results point to the existence of misconceptions about the evaluative action and the need to improve the training of high school teachers.
