As fachadas vegetadas possuem conhecidas propriedades benéficas ao meio urbano e às edificações, tais como a redução do consumo energético com climatização, mitigação dos gases do efeito estufa, redução de ilhas de calor, além do resgate da biodiversidade e do contato com a natureza, perdidos no meio urbano. Dessa forma, as mesmas têm sido objeto de estudo em diversos países, no Brasil os altos níveis de radiação solar tornam o clima favorável à implantação dessa tecnologia. Os sistemas de fachadas vivas (living wall systems) são entendidos como conjuntos de módulos ligados à parede, no qual o enraizamento das plantas se dá na própria estrutura e não no chão. Estas apresentam os maiores valores de energia embutida dentre os tipos existentes de jardins verticais, devido ao uso de materiais como metais e plásticos na composição de sua estrutura, por outro lado, apresentam desempenho superior de redução da carga térmica de edifícios e de fixação de carbono e outros gases do efeito estufa, reduzindo impactos ambientais. Dessa forma, este trabalho apresenta resultados acerca da energia embutida das fachadas vivas num contexto brasileiro e verifica a redução desse valor utilizando componentes alternativos na estrutura das mesmas, avançando nos estudos relativos às fachadas vegetadas e suas implicações ambientais no contexto brasileiro. Estudos conduzidos em outros países apresentam elevados impactos ambientais relacionados aos sistemas de fachadas vivas. Neste estudo, o tipo de fachada que apresentou maior energia embutida inicial foi o sistema de módulos de plástico, seguido do sistema em manta com estrutura metálica, e constatou-se que a substituição dos materiais tradicionalmente usados como o aço, por materiais de reduzido valor energético, como a madeira, reduziu o valor da energia embutida, sendo este o sistema que apresenta menor energia embutida por unidade de área, mesmo quando tratamos da reposição em 50 anos.
