A crescente busca por sistemas de geração de energia com baixo impacto ambiental, substituindo insumos derivados de hidrocarbonetos, implica nas pesquisas de novas fontes energéticas usando recursos biodegradáveis. Desta forma, os biocombustíveis são apresentados como uma proposta viável para atender aos requisitos econômicos e ambientais. No entanto, é necessário avaliar as tecnologias e a capacidade produtiva de recursos naturais, além da área geográfica brasileira para suprir a demanda. O presente artigo tensiona a substituição do metanol, derivado de hidrocarbonetos, no processo de fabricação do biodiesel pelo biocombustível renovável e com larga escala de produção no regime brasileiro, o etanol. O método empregado é a análise da eficácia do processo de obtenção do biodiesel por meio da modelagem da reação de transesterificação do triglicerídeo e do etanol desenvolvida por comparação de simulações computacionais em dois softwares, para estimar a viabilidade técnica e ambiental.
