Specimens of phanerogamic plants from the Catimbau National Park, located in northeastern Brazil, were collected during extensive fieldwork and analyzed together with information gathered from the specialized literature. A total of 613 species was recorded, belonging to 366 genera and 85 families. The largest families were Fabaceae, Poaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Asteraceae, Convolvulaceae, Malvaceae, Myrtaceae, Apocynaceae, Malpighiaceae, and Cyperaceae, comprising almost 60% of the species. The level of endemism found was below that projected in the literature, as only four known species are unique to the study area. The area is, however, home to a varied flora with high richness and numerous rare or threatened species, demonstrating the importance of the National Park for conserving the regional flora. Additionally, 34 new registrations are reported here for Pernambuco State.
The genus Varronia P. Browne (Cordiaceae) currently comprises ca. 125 Neotropical species, occurring from the United States (Arizona) to Argentina, mainly in the northern Andean region, Mexico, and Brazil (Miller, 2013). Since it was originally described by Browne (1756), Varronia has been treated in various ways: as a subgenus or section of Cordia and as a distinct genus. Borhidi et al. (1988) treated Varronia and published a list of new combinations. However, until the first decade of the 21st century, floristic works continued treating the species of Varronia under Cordia
We present a list of aquatic and wetland plant species from the state of Paraíba, Brazil, based on the collections deposited in national and international herbaria. We identified 290 species belonging to 61 families. The checklist includes habit, localities of the collections in the state of Paraíba, and geographic distribution of each species. The amphibious habit was the most prevalent and the Sertão (semiarid inland region) was the region with the greatest collection effort. New occurrences have been registered for the state (14 species). Although our data reveal a high plant richness, we relate this richness to increased field expeditions.
Cordia weddellii, a species of Cordia sect. Cordia (Cordiaceae, Boraginales) endemic to South America is recorded for the first time in Brazil, growing in Cerrado vegetation in Bahia and Tocantins states. A distribution map, photographs, comments on the habitat and phenology, and a preliminary conservation assessment are provided for the species. Additionally, we provide a lectotype for C. weddellii.
