The Autry National Center has engaged with the New Western History since its conception, yet faces many challenges in so doing. The name itself implies a romantic interpretation of the region, and the art and artifacts it holds are strongest in traditional subjects such as saloons, gunfighters, and cowboys. Yet the museum's founders were also committed to showing the history of women and the many cultures of the West in an honest way. Since its opening, exhibitions have expanded the scope to look at the environment, cities, and the twentieth-century West.
