A irradiação de alimentos é uma tecnologia que consiste em expor os alimentos a raios ionizantes de forma segura, a fim de eliminar crescimento microbiano, aumentando a conservação do produto. Entretanto, o consumidor não tem se mostrado capaz de identificar ou definir tal técnica, muito menos afirmar o que é um alimento irradiado. Diante disso foi aplicado um questionário online para consumidores em Palmas-Tocantins, quanto ao conhecimento sobre este tratamento. O objetivo foi traçar o perfil do consumidor e verificar seu conhecimento. O questionário foi aplicado para os habitantes de Palmas, estruturado com 10 questões, onde 9 são objetivas e 1 discursiva. Resultados indicaram que 57% dos participantes não sabem o que são alimentos irradiados, ainda 74% desconhecem o símbolo de alimentos irradiados e que o mesmo deve estar no rótulo. Além disso, 58% afirmaram não saber se consumiriam estes alimentos, porém 66% acreditam que não maléficos a saúde. Conclui-se que há a necessidade de esclarecimentos ao consumidor, quanto ao processo e benefícios de tal, principalmente em rótulos. Palavras-chave: irradiação, vida de prateleira, consumo.
