This study examined how role-plays impacted 27 counseling students' overall skills as measured by instructor ratings and selfratings during practice triads in a microskills course. A MannWhitney U nonparametric test revealed no significant difference for scripted versus personal concerns role-plays. Students indicated a strong belief that role-plays were an effective way to build overall counseling skills.Active learning strategies ask students to engage with the information, whether through application, interpretation, creation, or evaluation. Osborn (2008) summarized several outcome studies on the use of active learning strategies, including increased critical thinking, enhanced multicultural skills, higher instructor ratings, decreased competitiveness, higher test scores, and increased motivation, comprehension, and performance.
