Resumo: O objetivo deste artigo é auxiliar o trabalho de pessoas que estão se iniciando na pesquisa de História da Ciência, especialmente em relação a um determinado tipo de trabalho a que nos dedicamos. Este tratará da escolha de um tema adequado de pesquisa, dos tipos de fontes encontradas em História da Ciência e de alguns problemas encontrados em trabalhos de História da Ciência. Este estudo levou à conclusão de que só se apreende a fazer pesquisa em História da Ciência a partir da prática e que um bom historiador da ciência se constrói a longo prazo. Unitermos
Frederic Edward Clements (1874-1945), botânico norte-americano, deixou contribuições para a ecologia durante as quatro primeiras décadas do século XX. A ele é atribuída a proposta de conceitos como sucessão ecológica e clímax. O objetivo deste artigo é discutir sobre o percurso que levou Clements ao conceito de clímax no período compreendido entre 1904 e 1936. Além disso, esclarecer como esta contribuição foi recebida pela comunidade científica na época. Esta pesquisa levou à conclusão de que o termo clímax, ou mesmo sua conotação, não surgiram de imediato nas publicações de Clements (1904; 1905). Eles só apareceram a partir de 1916 (Clements, 1916) e estão intimamente relacionados com outras concepções suas como associação e organismo complexo, presentes em trabalhos anteriores (Clementes, 1904; Clements, 1905). Clements se baseou em estudos de campo e laboratório e em contribuições de outros autores. Não detectamos mudanças significativas em relação ao conceito de clímax entre 1916 e 1936. Ocorreu apenas a adição de mais detalhes e um refinamento das explicações anteriores. Quanto à recepção por parte da comunidade científica da época, pode-se dizer que as críticas foram dirigidas principalmente à restrição do clímax a aspectos climáticos e sua relação com a ideia de organismo complexo.
Embora o nome de Johann Gregor Mendel (1822-1884) seja associado geralmente à Genética e às “Leis de Mendel”, poucas pessoas tiveram a oportunidade de conhecer o conteúdo de seu artigo original sobre os padrões de herança nas ervilhas do gênero Pisum, publicado em 1866. O objetivo do presente artigo é discutir sobre essa contribuição, seu contexto e desdobramentos. Esta pesquisa levou à conclusão de que embora a contribuição de Mendel tenha se destacado pela sua metodologia, que envolvia matemática, estatística e noções sobre a divisão celular, resultantes de uma formação diferente da maioria de seus colegas naturalistas, suas investigações inseremse numa linha de pesquisa bastante ativa na época. E, além disso, tem-se que, considerar que o desenvolvimento da Genética durante o século XX, além de sua contribuição, são produto de um trabalho coletivo de vários cientistas provenientes de diversos países.
