Algumas histórias fecham um ciclo. O dessa começou na segunda semana de aula do primeiro ano da graduação em História, quando eu entrei no site de pós-graduação do IEL para ver os orientadores. Estava determinada a estudar história e literatura, então precisava saber se algum professor se interessava. É claro, que naquele momento eu não sabia como as coisas funcionavam, mas foi a primeira vez que eu me deparei com o nome do meu orientador. E foi a primeira vez que eu dei pulinhos de alegria pensando "é possível unir essas duas coisas! ". De lá para cá, passaram-se seis anos e entre a primeira semana de aula e o resto da graduação inteira, muita coisa aconteceu. Mas ironicamente, algo sempre me puxava para estudar temas daquele mesmo orientador cujo nome virou forma e ganhou sentido no decorrer do aprendizado universitário.Por isso, agradeço ao prof. Jefferson Cano por, indiretamente, ter sido o primeiro a me fazer acreditar que poderia estudar história e literatura. Por ter aceitado quando eu quis mudar radicalmente de um projeto para outro, cursar graduação e pós junto, e ainda complementar com o "projetinho" da empresa júnior bem no semestre de conclusão desse trabalho. Sem o seu apoio nada disso seria possível.Ainda com relação a esse trabalho, agradeço ao prof. Sidney Chalhoub que aceitou ler, durante a matéria que ofereceu em 2013, A família Medeiros. Essas primeiras considerações do professor, e também dos colegas, foram valiosas para o início da pesquisa. Ao professor Atílio Bergamini, agradeço por outra leitura em grupo, em 2014. Suas observações fizeram com que eu me atentasse para detalhes importantes do livro, que desenvolvi no segundo capítulo dessa dissertação. Finalmente, os apontamentos da banca de qualificação, com os professores Marcos Lopes e Lerice Garzoni, possibilitaram que o trabalho realmente se organizasse de forma concreta em seu tema principal. Agradeço por me mostrarem como todos os capítulos estavam unidos ao redor de uma problemática em comum. Pelo apoio financeiro que possibilitou essa pesquisa, agradeço a CAPES. À professora Márcia Abreu, agradeço por ter me guiado nos primeiros passos da vida acadêmica. A infância a gente nunca esquece e acho que vale o mesmo aqui. Os dois primeiros anos da pesquisa de mestrado teriam sido muito mais penosos se eu não tivesse mantido o contato com as pessoas desse grupo de pesquisa. Cássia, obrigada por acompanhar a jornada, os medos e surtos seriam maiores se estivesse sozinha. <p>A presença de negros e mestiços na sociedade brasileira vem sendo discutida desde o início da formação do país como estado independente no século XIX. Anos depois, os intelectuais do começo do século XX, por meio da hierarquização racial, ainda buscavam explicar as possibilidades de crescimento de um país com participação negra. Ao lado dessa construção oficial, a negritude manteve-se batalhando por espaço e reconhecimento que não diminuísse suas raízes culturais e que lhe desse direito à representatividade desde o fim da escravidão. Hoje, a internet deu a população negra do país um novo meio de se posicionar sobre questões raciais – abrindo espaços de disputa entre a intelectualidade com mais acesso aos meios de comunicação tradicional e o movimento negro.</p>
