Objective: this article analyzes the intellectual production on total laryngectomy.
Objective: to identify the perceptions of nursing teams working in the ICUs on the inhuman care; to identify their understanding on careless; and to characterize as careless the situations pointed out by nursing professionals as careless. Method: this is a descriptive and exploratory study with qualiquantitative approach. The setting consisted of two ICUs located in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The subjects were nurses and nursing technicians. The data collection was carried out through a structured script after the approval by the Research Ethics Committee of Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, under the Opinion36/2009. Results: it was possible to characterize inhuman care as careless, through the consistency of the reports from groups of subjects who were asked about inhuman care with those who answered to the questions on careless, something which shows the mistaken use of the terms, and the consequent spread of discourses on dehumanization in nursing. Conclusion: nursing has as its focus the care for the human being, the occurrence of any situation in which this does not happen in a satisfactory way constitutes an actual state of careless.
