As Hemoglobinopatias são desordens hereditárias muito freqüentes que afetam toda a população mundial e causam um grande problema de saúde pública. O Brasil apresenta uma alta prevalência de Hemoglobina S, com grandes diferenças regionais como conseqüência do processo de miscigenação. Os objetivos dessa revisão bibliográfica são destacar alguns aspectos relevantes do traço falciforme a fim de orientar os profissionais da saúde que atuam nos centros de hemoterapia sobre essa desordem e também, em virtude da falta de padronização de uma técnica de detecção da Hemoglobina S nos centros de hemoterapia, procuramos enfatizar os métodos utilizados e assim, levantar a discussão para a escolha de qual o melhor teste de triagem que deve ser utilizado nesses centros.
