La sostenida inmigración latinoamericana y caribeña que ha venido experimentando Chile, particularmente, desde la década de 1990 ha conllevado un aumento de alumnos extranjeros en las escuelas. La creciente diversidad cultural resultante de este proceso plantea nuevas interrogantes y desafíos al sistema escolar. Con el fin de aportar al conocimiento respecto de la forma en que los establecimientos educativos abordan dicha diversidad, este artículo presenta un estudio de caso de un establecimiento que, desde inicios del mencionado fenómeno migratorio, ha recibido alumnos migrantes, siendo hoy una de las escuelas públicas con las más altas tasas de matrícula extranjera a nivel nacional. Mediante una aproximación cualitativa fue posible identificar que, a pesar de la heterogeneidad del alumnado, esta escuela implementa varios dispositivos dirigidos a homogeneizar al estudiantado, normándolo y disciplinándolo, lo que deja entrever que rige allí una lógica asimilacionista. Esta paradoja (heterogeneidad del alumnado junto a prácticas homogeneizantes) representa un obstáculo en el avance hacia una educación pública que aborde la diversidad cultural presente en las aulas.
