HIL~RT r eut, en I9OO, le grand m~rite de montrer que la m~thode tir~e de la th6orie des fonctions continues usuelles permet d'6tablir effectivement l'existence de la solution du probl~me de DtRICHLET. Prima ancora che WEIERSTRASS desse i! noto teorema sulla rappresentazione delle funzioni continue di variabile reale, TCHEBYCHEV (Sur le~ questions de minima qui se rattachent ~ la rappresentation approximative des fonctions. M6moires de l'Academie imp6riale des Sciences de S. Petersbourg, t. IX, 1859) studi5 la rappresentazione approssimata di tall funzioni mediante polinomi di grado dato. I1 metodo di TCHEBYCHEV fU per !ungo tempo dimenticato, e solo nel 1902 fu ripreso e reso perfettamente rigoroso da P. KmCHBERGER (lnaugurcgl-Dissertation : Ueber Tchebychefsche Annaherungsmethoden. GOttingen 190~ (*)) il quale raise, per primo, in luce le importanti proprietb~ di cui godono i polinomi d'approssimazione (che sono quelli che il metodo di TCHEBYCHEV indica per la rappresentazione delle funzioni continue). Pifi recentemente, nel 1905, il metodo di TGHEBYCHEV ~ stato esposto, seguendo le traccie del tavoro del KIRCHBERGER, nelle Legons sur les fonetions de variables rdelles et les ddveloppements en sdries de polynomes di E. BOREL. Ultimamente, poi, M. FRI~CHET (Comptes rendus de l'Acaddmie des Sciences, 1907) ha enunciato, relativamente alia rappresentazione delle funzioni di una variabile reale, continue ed a periodo °2 =, mediante potinomi trigonometrici, risultati analoghi a quelli ottenuti nei lavori sopraddetti (**).In questo lavoro, esposto brevemente il metodo di TCHEBYCHEV per le funzioni di una variabite reale, passo a fame t'estensione al caso di due (~) Un estratto di questa Tesi trovasi nei Mathematische Annalen del 1903, 57 Band.
